Spanish 1 Reflection

I nearly flunked Spanish 2 sophomore year. I transferred to a new school known as St. Joseph Notre Dame High School, where we had a strict teacher, Mr. Mueller. The second day of his class, we were given a quiz, and given my past history with Spanish 1, I knew I had this one in the bag. How I was farther from the truth, as it only took 2 failing quizzes for him to come up to my desk and say to me "I recommend you try again. From the beginning." He was not wrong; the school I transferred from served public education, whereas in St. Joseph the education was more competitive than the former. However, no matter what, I was devastated about the truth. I loathe the drop from Spanish 2 to Spanish 1; I felt defeated and wanted to scream at the world for my problems. I formed a mental barrier, that shielded me from reality because I hated the harsh truth. Rather, I was afraid of accepting it. But my Spanish 1 teacher saw right past that, and she understood. I didn't think most teachers want to understand their students; I thought their only goal was to grade what we bring to the table, whereas my goal originally was to pass Spanish without support from anybody. She told me that "no one is successful on their own. Even in the lonely times, there must be someone out there who brought them to where they are at." We didn't build trust …show more content…

Lay multiple times throughout my entire high school career as well, and there was no class that I looked forward to more than third period Spanish as a senior. No one has ever told me that it was going to be easy, but that I could do it and I was never discouraged to not pursue my dreams by anyone. Lee took the longest time to dissect his frog because he wanted to settle for nothing less than perfection, as impeccable was not a great enough adjective. The most influential people who taught me shaped me into the type of student I want to be and that everyone should try to be. I learned from Lee Buono that we should strive for perfection, even if that takes some extra time.…

The article, “Want to Get Into College? Learn to Fail” by Angel B. Perez is about learning from your failures. Perez gave many examples from students on how some are scared to fail and some get a life lesson out of failing. An example from the article that helped me understand the main point was when Perez said, “We believe an error in high school should not define the rest of your life, but how you respond could shape you forever.” I understood from this line that Perez believes that students should admit their mistakes because by doing so they become a different person.…

As a, Agender Queer Chicanx I navigate the world as someone that constantly has to evaluate the way I look and behave otherwise I risk putting myself in danger. When I walk into a room I have to make sure that my demeanor and vocal tone are palatable, or risk being profiled and seen as a danger to those around me. When I see law enforcement, I have to automatically start accessing all of my actions of the day to make sure I did not break some law or raise my voice to high. My daily day walking about and taking public transit is clouded with the need to be presentable and be an upstanding citizen or else. All that at a personal level, but maintained by a society that forces me to conform, adapt and be seen as “one of the good ones” in order to live and be seen as worthy of human decency.…

It was at this time that Spanish changed for me because I was going to learn how to read, write and speak this language more fluently. It’s the first day of school and I’m already in my second class of the day which was Spanish level 1 and 2 for beginners. The class room is over its capacity because there are roughly about 10 students without seats so they have to sit on the floor. The first week of school was pretty simple in this class mostly just introduction and having to write a few made up stories.…
