PREFACE
“History must always be taken with a grain of salt.
It is, after all, not a science but an art.”
Phyliis McKinley

In these pages we strive to broaden man’s ceaseless search for truth and his tireless efforts to tear away at the facades of conventional belief. We aspire to bring enlightenment and culture to the unwashed masses who live in this paradise we call Southwest Florida. We walk the reader through eons of events that have reportedly occurred here. Our past is replete with many dramatic events that bring us to where we are today. By reviewing the past and present we offer readers a fleeting glimpse of the future.
Recorded history, however, is a mosaic of interpretations, perceptions, translations and the agendas of the recorders.

But, there’s another whole side of the southwest Florida experience: traffic on route 41, summer’s heat, humidity and violent thunderstorms. what’s with that nice, little old lady who elbowed you out of the way in a Publix line the other day, the annual snowbird assault, and less we forget, hurricanes and Florida politics. Southwest Florida is all the above; an enigma of paradise!
Our stories were borne of our quest for a better understanding and appreciation for this region. We’ve created a tapestry of stories that celebrate the richness, complexity and general wackiness that makes up the southwestern Florida experience.
The Chronicles looks at the Calusa Indians who were originally called the "Calos" which means "Fierce People". On a bad hair day these folks would probably just as soon kill you then pass the time in friendly

And for sheer intrigue don’t miss the story of how our own version of the Loch Ness Monster, a creature called Calucy came to be. While many of the events and people above are duly noted in more legitimate scholarly works there are others nearly universally overlooked and whose fascinating stories typify our uniqueness, originality and bizarreness. Undoubtedly, you will be presenting you with your first look at Harry and Anne McGinty and their obsession with Florida weather, Dr. Hemnce Hazedanes and his medicinal cures, Tom Fellows and his topical lightning protection salve and Emma Hartwick and her amazing Ford pop-corn maker to name just a few. There’s even an expose on the real truth behind those devilishly cunning no-see-ums. These along with many other tales of wonder and surprise make up this fascinating collection of

In History “In History”, by Jamaica Kincaid, weaves together the stories of Christopher Columbus, George Clifford, and Carl Linnaeus so that the reader may understand why the author is questioning her own history and those who are like her. Kincaid questions us, “What is History? Is it a Theory? Is it an Ideal” She answers these questions through the stories of these three men as they come across and label foreign people, lands, or plants. Kincaid implies that the act of identifying and labeling unfamiliar with familiar terms are taken from these men 's subjective lives.…

History is a subject based on story telling. Sometimes, it is based off letters and written documents. History is not written down for others to learn in a nonbiased opinion in the present moment. Historians must go through these documents later and decide what is biased, and what is not. They must read about an event from multiple perspectives and try and pick out what happened and what is an opinion.…

History is ever changing and multi-sided because over the years, people's opinions and perspectives on certain traditions and actions change, new ways of life and items that existed in those times are still being discovered and different interpretations of the same event can influence others' opinions on history. Over the years, people's opinions and perspectives on certain traditions and actions change. For example, in the early 19th century, dueling with guns was socially acceptable and widely practiced, but now, in the 21st century, dueling with guns is no longer a socially acceptable practice. Over the years, people have contemplated the reasons that Hamilton and Burr could've had the duel.…

    Carr Vs Elton Analysis

The debate between E.H. Carr and G.R. Elton signifies the conflict between the “Old School” of historical studies and the Revisionist model. Carr proposes that there exists within historical studies the need for interpretation, and that there is no such thing as a universalized “truth” or “fact”. This is evocative of the Postmodernist phenomenon to critique and rethink approaches to history, which I will discuss later in this paper. Elton, on the other hand, emphasizes the universal “truth” within historical studies. He insists that there is no such thing as “subjectivity”, and all facts within historical sources are indeed just that – facts.…

Ehrenreich discusses her experiences as a low-wage worker and the everyday difficulties she encounters in her position. Ehrenreich publicizes the plight of low-wage workers by using analogies, which highlight the challenges low-wage workers face, emotionally charged words, to allow the reader to connect with the story, and extreme language to arouse sympathy from the audience. Ehrenreich uses the analogies of food and battlefields in order to emphasize the difficulties of her situation. Ehrenreich describes her workplace as a “a fat person’s hell” (Ehrenreich 179), which creates a picture in the mind of the reader.…

When one considers the state of Florida there are two attributes, or defining characteristics, that automatically come to mind: Disney World and oranges. Although it may not seem this way, Disney World and oranges are actually much more closely related than meets the eye. In the case of Oranges 1, a farm full of orange groves and citrus production located at approximately 27°34'37.32"N 80°38'45.02"W, this is one of the few surviving orange groves left within the state of Florida. With forty-nine percent of citrus production in the United States occurring in Florida, it is difficult to understand how the industry could possibly be declining. The fact of the matter is, this decline is derived not from the farmers in Florida choosing to farm…
