This console was the successor to the original as I previously mentioned. This was released in the year of 2000 and retailed at £299. It was part of the sixth generation of consoles. The sixth generation already included Dreamcast at the time of PlayStation 2's release. It would also go on to include Microsoft's original Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube a year later. These consoles were the main competition for Sony's PlayStation 2. Sony's new console boasted backwards compatibility which allowed it to run and let users play original PlayStation games on it. This was a great feature as it allowed gamers to continue to enjoy any backlog of PS1 games they had, on their PS2.
Just like its predecessor, the PS2 received a new redesign which was the PlayStation 2 Slimline. The Slimline was released in 2004 and was more compact and quieter than the original PS2. The redesign also included a built-in Ethernet port.
As of December 28, 2012, the PS2 achieved sales amassing to 155 million. The Guardian reported on January 4, 2013, that worldwide production of the PS2 had ended.
