Softball is a game enjoyed by millions of people around the world. The game is played on a diamond-shaped field that involves two teams of players. The teams are filled with players who pitch, hit, and field in order to get runs to score. While the sport is often just seen as a game of skill and strategy, there is also a deeply ingrained principle of physics in it. Understanding the physics behind the beloved game can help provide valuable insight into enhancing a player's abilities. When I was younger I played softball, was never good at it but still holds a special place for me. Understanding why the ball moves when it is thrown or hit, what happens when it hits a bat or player's glove, why friction matters, and how momentum and energy are …show more content…
This also happens when a player catches the ball, they are applying an impulse to stop its momentum, bringing the ball to a halt. Another instance of momentum is when two players collide on the field, their combined momentum before they crash into each other is the same as their combined momentum after they bounce off each other. A running outfielder collides with a runner trying to steal a base, the total momentum of both players moving together before they collide is the same as when they separate after the initial impact. Knowing how this momentum works helps us understand how players move around each other and interact in the game. It's very important to understand this concept so you can avoid serious injuries. Energy is the powerhouse behind the game. There are two types of energy we see in softball, kinetic energy and potential energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, while the potential is stored energy that's waiting to be used. When a player swings the bat and hits the ball, energy is transferred from the moving bat to the stationary ball. This transfer of energy turns the potential energy stored in the bat into kinetic energy in the

Softballs are based on two metrics- Coefficient of Restitution (COR) and compression. COR represents how “bouncy” the ball is. The higher the COR, the more bouncy the ball is and the farther it will fly. The compression is measured of how hard a softball is; the higher the compression, the harder the ball and the farther it will fly. Testing shows a “softball compression had a significant effect on batted ball speed.…

The pitching is getting faster, bat speeds are getting quicker, and bats are created with newer and better technology; these three things are resulting in softballs popping off bats at higher velocities, yet no required protective measures are being taken to protect the pitcher from the ball. Getting hit by a ball traveling at high speeds can have devastating effects on a pitcher if no safety measures are taken to soften the blow of the ball. A hit to the body or face of a pitcher cannot be prevented, but the injuries can be reduced to minimal. A face mask can save a pitcher not only from facial injuries, but it weakens the impact of the ball and can save her life. The distance from home plate to the mound in softball is 43 feet, but…

Pitching requires a great deal of time and effort to perfect a pitch, so dedication is a necessity to become the pitcher every player is afraid to hit off of. Different situations call for different pitches, and a great pitcher will execute each pitch when called. Softball pitches are classified according to the ball’s spin as a fastball, an off-speed pitch, and a breaking ball.…

One example of the physics of baseball is when it comes into hitting the baseball. If you're trying to hit a fastball at 90 MPH your reaction time is going to be under .28 seconds. The sweet spot is the area on the bat that is right in the center of the barrel of the bat. Hitting the ball on the sweet spot of the bat will make that ball go farther. Velocity of the thrown ball will also affect how far and how hard the ball comes off of the bat.…
