Socio Technical Systems
Being aware of the socio technical systems in one’s organization is very important. If an IT manager is unable to identify the socio technical systems that exist in their organizations, they will likely miss several opportunities to improve those systems. Short falls may exist in socio technical systems but if a manager is unaware of the present systems they will likely be unable to identify the issues. Because of this each team member gets stretched across multiple projects at once. They end up only performing the duties they are very strong at in each project. This causes an issue of becoming pigeon holed into a particular sill set. Traditionally, system and network engineers tend to like to broaden their skills to become more valuable. It is not easily possible to do that in the MSM team because of the amount of specific work that takes place.
So now you have a team of people who have specialized in a very small skills set. Each team member can represent a single component of a socio technical system. As the skills base for each component becomes more and more narrow, the need to rely on the other team members, or components increases.
