It is imperative for social workers to gain a thorough understanding of their client’s community. An individual’s perspective and attitude is significantly influenced by their micro and macro environments (Netting, 2012). For example, a client’s community is the link between the individual and the resources provided in their environment. Social workers must be able to critically assess the environment in order to identify its needs and functions (Netting, 2012). Despite the vast amount of community information on the Internet, it is important to recognize that more than one platform can be used to assess and understand an entire community. The gentrification process is raising the cost of living and negatively affecting its native residents (Silicon Valley Community Foundation, 2012). A local resident of 20 years reported that they were not able to afford the cost of living and will need to move away due to the rising cost in rent (personal communication, August 9, 2014). *Furthermore, some residents who are unable to afford moving costs, are even being forced out onto the streets.
