The results came in and they were extremely poor, Roberts then realized the computers were inefficient because the circuit-ran telephone line system they were using was inadequate in keeping up with the communication between the two computers. This furthermore confirmed Roberts’ notion that packet switching was necessary in order to make Licklider’s dream of “a galactic network” a reality for everyday people. In 1966, Roberts approached DARPA with his plan regarding the computer network concept of ARPANET, the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, which would eventually be published in 1967. At the conference where Roberts presented his paper about ARPANET, there was a paper on the packet network concept from the United Kingdom Company NPL, as well. NPL CEO Roger Scantleberry told Roberts about the packet network concept and the company RAND that had also written a paper on packet switching networks for encrypted voice communication in the military. By coincidence, the work at MIT, NPL, and RAND had happened at the same time without any of the companies knowing about each other’s …show more content…
Cloud computing is the practice of accessing and storing information and programs over the internet. The cloud essentially allows you to do everything within it that you are able to do on your laptop or desktop. The term cloud was first coined in 1996 at Compaq offices in Houston by a group of start up executives. The term was used by an executive when he was describing an idea of “cloud computing applications” (Fogarty), little did he know he was creating the start of a revolution in, not only computer science, but the modern world. Fast forward to 1999 and Salesforce.com has become the first to introduce applications via an internet website. This revolutionary concept enabled software companies across the world to provide applications over the world wide web. Next, Amazon took the reigns by who provided cloud based storage and computation. Eventually a couple years later in 2009 Google releases Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Google Talk, and many other companies follow suit in this type of cloud
