1. For the network under analysis in this lab, what effect did implementing silent suppression have on the data traffic? Why?
After analyzing the graphs with and without silence suppression it’s clear that silence suppression significantly improves network functions while transmitting data. Silence suppression saves on bandwidth by not transmitting data while the call is “silent”. If no data is being transferred then there are no data packets being sent across the network.
2. For the network under analysis in this lab, what effect did implementing silent suppression have on the VoIP traffic? Why?
While silence suppression is on the network’s response time is much faster than when it is off. In every scenario with the graphs, while silence is on the response time is faster and packet delay is slower.
3. What would be a possible disadvantage to implementing silent suppression on a VoIP network?
One of the possible disadvantages of silence suppression is the appearance that the line has gone dead due to the lack of background noise. For this issue comfort noise can be generated which creates the illusion of background noise. Another issue with silence suppression are words being clipped
