Wk1 DQ2: It has been postulated that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is not financially sustainable. In your opinion, should the ACA be revised/amended or repealed/defunded? Why or why not? Please discuss and support your opinion with outside sources.
It is imperative the Affordable Care Act (ACA) addresses healthcare non-sustainability, the ACA shares, “Health care spending represented 17.2 percent of our gross domestic product in 2011” (APHA). The Affordable Care Act is essential to provide insurance for the 32 million uninsured people. The author is in support of working towards stabilizing the ACA because the nation will reap positive results. The author is a mother of two; the effectiveness, quality, and access to care is one of my top concerns. Both my daughters and I carry Epipens in the event of an emergency. So, it is important that the author has cost effective coverage. Presently, my daughters receive state/government assisted healthcare, without it the author could not afford to purchase their medication. The present cost for an Epipen out of pocket is roughly 780.00 per capita. Furthermore, insurance covers office visits for my daughters at no charge. If the author was required to a pay a large portion of out-of-pocket expenses, it would create a financial hardship and drive healthcare costs. Butler, PhD., MA for The Journal of the American Medical Association points out “for many households, the president’s promise of affordable coverage rings hollow and has not been realized” (Butler). There are only 10 million people enrolled in healthcare compared to earlier projections. Because of this, the Central Budget Office (CBO) has lowered its projective growth to a modest increase for the insured and the uninsured will cease to decline. Although the ACA has made progress, there are still areas that need to be readdressed so healthcare cost reduction can be realized.
