B: Australians are used to thinking that a journey is physical but they never think that the journey could be a spiritual one. In Jackie French’s 1993 novel, ‘Walking the Boundaries’ Martin, the main character, goes on a physical and spiritual journey where he learns about his family’s past and the importance of looking after the land. A: Thesis Statement: Jackie French uses third person narrative, an obvious plot and descriptive language to intrigue and engage the reader to see the physical and spiritual journey that Martin goes on.…
In The Devil in the White City, the events of the World’s Fair in Chicago are recounted in stunning clarity, hearing about the architects involved and their own personal journeys. From the beginning as well, the readers are informed about H. H. Holmes, the serial killer who resided at the Fair’s doorstep. Since the killer’s identity is already spoiled for the audience, Erik Larson is forced to resort to other means of captivating his readers and holding them in suspense. Throughout Larson’s novel, he uses simple literary tactics to achieve his goals. While detailing the architects’ journeys to building the Fair, Larson uses less suspense in the beginning, as nothing is in need of it, but as he keeps writing and the architects’ lives begin…
Go Dogs Go, not only is memorized into my brain, but is sitting on my bookshelf with tape holding the cover on, and the color of the illustrations fading every day, no longer the color they were. On page 5, I can still notice the cheesy, Cheetos fingerprint, even though my mother always told me to wash my hands after I finished eating, and before reading. Not only did I have memories with your book, I had journeys. Every time I listened to the book or as I mumbled, and stuttered, trying each word until I was old enough to fluently read this child’s book. Journeys flooding into my imagination as each word was spoken, or as each dog crossed the page.…
What do you think of when you hear the word “Hawaii”? Do you think of somewhere that privilege people vacation to? Perhaps it’s where individuals wear their button up palm tree t-shirts. Do you think of the movie, Lilo and Stitch? Perhaps you think everyone eats Spam and just sit around all day enjoying the beautiful sunshine.…
My mind tends not to linger on literature for a long period of time. But, throughout this semester of Writing in Culture, Fremont High School written by Jonathan Kozol, did exactly that, linger. For some reason I wish I could say that this story relates to me, because of some personal experience that I had going through high school. In reality, my high school was great, I believe that is why this essay lingered in my head.…

The Rabbits Written by John Marsden and illustrated by Shaun Tan, 'The Rabbits' is an allegorical tale of colonisation. First published in 2000 by Lothian Books, the book parallels the real life happenings of the British invasion and colonisation of Australia and the effects on the Indigenous Australians. Tan's illustrations open his audience's eyes with his peculiar, bold, semi-abstract style that conveys the anxiety and bewilderment of the possums as they bear witness to the mass destruction that follows along with the rabbits. Already in the beginning, the text from Opening One "The rabbits came many grandparents ago.…
I never read a core book in high school. Reading has just never been my thing, until I came to college. Since I was paying for my classes, I figured I actually had to start doing the things I am required to do, such as reading. This year, I was introduced to a book called Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario.…

Establishing an Authentic Aboriginal Voice in Picture books If a strong literature based on Aboriginal forms is to develop, the place for this development is among people least affected by assimilation, and once an upsurge of literature begins it is only a matter of conjecture where it may lead. In fact, future Aborigines may look back on this present settlement literature as having lost simplicity, or a complexity only brought out through a deep reading of the text (Mudrooroo 315). Developing an authentic and complex Aboriginal voice, separate from the ideals of the colony, may be an ongoing process for adult literature. However, the same struggle is less methodical for children 's picture books as Fanon 's three phases of establishing…
A world without literature would be one stuck in constant reoccurrence, ignorant to others collective advancement and defeats. Telling a story whether it be a first or second hand account always has an underlying purpose for writing. This elemental component of writing allows authors to reflect and evaluate their personal accounts and decisions, it prevents readers from making the same mistakes as their past ancestors, and educates those in forthcoming centuries what trials and tribulations have led them to their current liveliness. Literature is the integrating mechanism that keeps all educational subjects at a progressive pace. When studying such topics as mathematics, science, health, art and music one must first analyze past literary works…
Shaun Tan's picture book, The Red Tree, explores several key personal challenges that are central to life, such as the struggle of being confused about the meaning of your life. This is depicted in the frame, 'Sometimes you just don't know what you are suppose to do', which showcases our protagonist on a stage forced to put on an act with with a multitude of different objects varying in ages and origins. Tan has used the symbolic item of a puppet that looks like the protagonist. The puppet is symbolic of the girl's lack of sense of self. She feels like she as to act to suit everyone's expectations of her, that she must manipulate herself much like how someone manipulates a puppet to put on a performance.…
Reading Memoir John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars, stated,” Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.” Actually, reading books helps me to explore the world. When I was just a little girl, I loved reading fairy tales which brought me to many vicarious thrilling adventures, and when growing up, non-fiction books taught me how to become a good person. Besides that, reading has brought me to many various levels of emotions, such as joy, love, hate, fear, and sorrow. Some stories not only make me feel euphoric with happy endings, but they also make me feel despondent when a character’s deep sorrow touched my heart.…
Change is a constant in the universe and in the innumerable worlds of science fiction. In these worlds, Science Fiction is used to predict the outcome of the most unimaginable changes in ourselves and our worlds. Isaac Asimov’s Nightfall, for example, predicts what would happen if night only came once every several thousand years. Octavia Butler’s Bloodchild speaks of a future where descendants of human colonists become the hosts of a parasitic race, and are cared for in return. The Witches of Karres by James Schmitz show us an empire of the future controlled by nobles and companies, and captains and adventures braving the unknown.…
The narrative poem, “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost has long been a well-received favorite. This story is based on the idea of things hidden from view. Two roads lie before the poet, but the poet is clueless as to where these roads will lead. In order to convey Frost’s message, “The Road Not Taken” relies heavily on the use of imagery, metaphorical language and metrical devices to bring to life this actual and figurative road. Through the use of these literary devices, the theme is set, and the emotion and mystery are felt.…
