Ethos is a term with Greek origins and here refers to morals, values and beliefs of the school. It is affected by the type of school and its philosophy e.g. religious ethos. The school’s mission is what it intends to achieve and it is the summary of goals put forward by the school like a ‘motto’. The mission is based on the school’s distinctive beliefs. The development of a mission statement is a challenging process for schools. Once this consensus has been reached it is expressed in the mission statement. The mission statement comprises a core message: School’s original purpose and the values that the school stands for. The ethos of the school should be recognisable when entering the school setting as it is part and parcel of the environment
