The San Joaquin Valley, also known as the “Central Valley”, is a major component of California in numerous ways. The valley is probably one of the biggest producers of agriculture in California, the nation, and the world. As this vital part of California feeds the world with a massive abundance of crops and livestock. On the other hand, the San Joaquin Valley has probably some of the worst air quality in the nation. This is mainly because of fuel emissions, climate, and topography. The bad air has really impacted those with asthma, respiratory issues and a factor in the possible cause of premature birth. The pollution has affected agriculture by causing reduced crop yields. The climate which is very warm to hot has made the pollution worse. This paper will discuss some of the causes of air pollution in the San Joaquin Valley, the impacts pollution put on people’s lives and health, health costs, effects on crop yields, keeping track of current and future emissions, permits to limit emissions, and lower emission technology.
Fuel Emissions There a lot of people driving in California, especially in the San Joaquin Valley. These cars burn …show more content…
In wintertime, when a high pressure system stalls over the valley it can cause severe stagnation. The high pressure system prevents air/wind from moving causing stagnation. A stagnation period occurred “when the California Regional PM10/PM2.5 Air Quality Study (CRPAQS) during the period December 2000–January 2001. The PM2.5 mass concentrations as high as 200 μg m−3 and PM2.5 nitrate concentrations as high as 70 μg m−3 were measured in the southern portion of the Central Valley during CRPAQS (Yang & Kleeman, 2008).” A major cause of PM2.5 concentrations during the wintertime in the San Joaquin Valley are from “OC from wood burning, and secondary ammonium nitrate from animal and transportation related sources (Yang & Kleeman,
