Walking into the Coker Repertory Dance Company on the first day was like an adrenaline rush. Not only did I develop new friendships within my peer group, but it allowed me to expand my knowledge of dance outside of my previous training with professional choreographers. During the fall semester, I learned the choreography of “Turn on the Blacklight” by Teena Marie Custer. This piece was the most successful performance for me as I was able to apply my jazz and hip-hop experience. Not only did I learn the choreography of “Turn on the Blacklight”, but a choreographer, Meg Schriffen, came in and taught a piece her company performed known as “Cosi Si Comincia”. We were required to learn the piece by Christmas break and perfected in the spring before Meg returned to …show more content…
This course enabled me to explore the difference concepts of dance such as experimenting with tempo, level differentiations, exploring use of different limbs, and allowing movement to start in a limb and end with a distal end. This experience came from the different studies we have completed in class such as shapes and the partner study especially. The partner study allowed me to perform one of my peer’s style which provided me the opportunity to explore uncomfortable positions, unfamiliar movement, and a different tempo. I never knew how far my body could extend until reaching as far as possible became a part of my body study. Being in Composition I has enabled me to understand how to narrate my movement. For example, I have noticed that narrating my movement has allowed me to experiment with adding emotion in and personal experience. Receiving feedback after showings is something I looked forward too. It is a way to help me explore different pathways and different ways to manipulate my movement. Every time I receive feedback, I try to apply it to not only my choreography in composition, but also in modern and

“Training as the medium through which”, chapter 3, written by Melanie Bales is a chapter that is written on the theme of self-discovery and how as dancers we could apply the ideas to ourselves. Melanie Bales is a professor at Ohio State where she graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy. Bales also studied at the Joffrey School and was a Harkness Ballet Trainee. Throughout this article, I experienced different things for myself when going through and reading each section. A lot of references that were stated in the book allowed me to see dance through a whole new perspective.…

Back then there used to be a possibility of catching a rising star, getting in on the ground floor with an unknown choreographer and staying with their reputation and ability to offer employment growth. The success on modern dance is so low now that it is almost impossible for “emerging” choreographers to make the next step toward paid work for their dancers. In our dance meeting, last Tuesday, Professor Hapke and Dr. Sims proceeded to tell us that the arts funding was getting cut and that the opportunities we had, will no longer be available. This means huge things where choreographers right out of school, with no shortage of talent, brains, or hard work need almost impossible quantities of luck and personal connections to break through to the next level. The Joyce Theater’s “Altogether Different” series, spotlights “fresh” talent as well as now featuring the same choreographers more than once over the span of the few…

“Dancing is my greatest passion and spreading such knowledge among new generations is my happiness“ said Ana. The flamenquita, as everybody calls her, is an example of how enormous goals can become tangible projections. This is my cousin, a woman who graduated with a bachelor degree in fine art in dance and built a small business to show our community the significance of the art as a part of the children’s education. She believes in the magic of dance and the miracles it can do. Therefore, she decided to open a dance studio.…

This past weekend, at the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre at the University of Arizona, I went to see the dance performance Here & Now. As I was buying my ticket, I did not really know what to expect from this concert. To be honest, I did not know really anything about this show that I had just paid to see. Originally, I thought that this show would just be a requirement for me to pass this class. However, after seeing this show, it became much more to me than just a grade.…

My experience at the Heartbeat workshop and Spirits Rising concert was both educational and enjoyable. These events explored the culture of the Native Americans of the Great Lakes area. The workshop included participation in traditional dance, an example of both traditional and arranged music, a version of the Native American creation story, and a summary of the culture throughout history. The concert was an excellent opportunity to learn through observation, but I mostly took the chance to enjoy a new type of music. It also included audience participation in a traditional round dance and continuing access to their music.…

Every pirouette and grande jeté felt so liberating and suddenly, I was dancing the final steps in the choreography. After my solo was complete, I curtsied, concluding my performance. The audience cheered as I bowed, making all of the endless rehearsals, challenging corrections and taxing preparations worthwhile. As a young girl, who simply twirled in a circle until she was dizzy, I couldn’t have imagined my ballet technique would lead to opportunities such as this. Although I didn’t always love the challenging aspects of ballet, I have grown to find passion, self-confidence and excitement through the art form.…

I have appreciated dance for so long. After my freshman year of dance, I learned that change can be a good thing. So as I sit here and wait, all I can think about is how much this one room has changed me more than I ever thought it would in passed years. I can’t believe how much I have changed since I started dance in fifth grade. I have improved in dancing as well as being able to express myself and my feeling through movement.…

Dance is a common theme in every culture. It doesn’t require a specific language in order to be understood and can be interpreted in many different ways. However, this subjective point of view can also make it being difficult to convey a specific theme. By combining aspects of music and visual art I can more easily define what emotions and theme I conveying during my performance. Physics must also be taken into account when choreographing.…

The collections of works shown in the Evening of Dance performance were very engaging. The three Booker T. Washington ensembles: World Repertory Ensemble, Repertory Dance Company 1, and Repertory Dance Company 2 were all able to convey the ideal emotions and create a visceral reaction. World Repertory Ensemble’s piece “Sofa” a traditional African performance choreographed by Moussa Diabate started the concert, the end of the first act was Repertory Dance Company 2’s “9/Tenths of the Law” a very unpredictable piece choreographed by Andy Noble, and the piece that separated these particularly upbeat and climatic works was Repertory Dance Company 1’s elegant performance of “Concerto Six Twenty-two – 1st Movement” originally choreographed by Lar…

Loud beats, shouts and footsteps fill my ears, and an awful stench of sweat makes it’s way into my nose, but this dance studio is a special place nonetheless. It may seem hectic and rowdy to some people, but not to me. An environment I entered so cautiously at first started to become natural and safe. I had never thought I would spend so much time in this place doing something I loved. I would not forget how the first day went.…

In dance, you learn quickly that without pure dedication and drive you will never be successful. While talent can come naturally, skill and technique only come with hard work. I spent countless hours in dance studios growing up, working tirelessly to hone these skills and perfect technique. A lifetime of dance taught me what it means to have discipline and dedication to a craft, values which I have also seen reflected in my clinical experiences. Medicine is a practice which calls for just as much discipline, dedication, and drive.…

Dance is just like an essay. In order to get better, each individual needs to practice. The biggest difference, at least for me, is that most of the time dance is fun and an essay is not. Well, enough of comparing. Lets go back 4 years ago when I first entered Woodrow Wilson High School.…

The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…
