The Sami believed in a type of polytheism, which means they believed in multiple gods. They also believed that some mountains, rivers or plants were alive. They created items that were supposed to have good willing spirits in them to help in their daily life. Four hundred years ago, or earlier, when winter ended, the Sami people used to come together and celebrate different things. It started with people choosing this time to get a date the next year to celebrate marriage, and the next year all the relative were invited to celebrate childbirth. When they were together they wanted to show who’s reindeer were the strongest and best, so they started to run the reindeer race and several sports activities. It wasn’t organized but they just came together and it happened.
Today they celebrate an annual culture and music festival held in Manndalen in Kåfjord, with a goal of bringing forward Sami and other cultures of indigenous
