SMEBP: Five Step Process

Improved Essays
. SMEBP allows for acceptable evidence to be collected through its five step process. The first step is the preparation phase wherein the nurse researcher searches for and selects research for practice implementation. In the preparation phase, the nurse researcher identifies the need for practice change, identifies and creates the PICOT question as well as the search elements that would facilitate the collection of the best available evidence. The second step is the validation phase whereby the collected evidence is subjected to reviews that determine their value in terms of capacity to answer the PICOT question. In this phase, the nurse researcher appraises the findings of the study using specific methodology and utilization considerations

Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt (2015) wrote that without updating the best evidence, practice is quickly outdated, and often at disadvantage to the patients. And as nurse leaders, we need should be the ones that say there are better, safer ways to take care of our patients and the old ways are not necessarily the best. Using the PICOT question can help the nurse leader in researching the best practices and thus obtaining high-quality results. Each letter of PICOT represents an item that the nurse looks for while researching: (P) is for the patient or problem, (I) is for intervention, (C) is for comparison, (O) is for the outcome, and (T) is for the time.…

Great job to all members of this group, I enjoyed reading your points in favor of EBNP and other points that against nurses using EBNP only. It is true that EBNP does not discard all nursing theories but used those ones that can be proven to improve quality of care and still relevant for our days as focused on nursing practice shifted to the use of research work and technology in nursing care.” Nursing profession, as a practice discipline sanctioned by society, is expected to incorporate the best sound evidence of patient care with the clear purpose of improving that care. Evidence- based nursing practice is more than use of research because it includes all forms of practice knowledge. In essence, evidence- based nursing is a discipline in…

Determining the strength of a nursing research study is a critical process that enhances the implementation of evidence-based practice. Determining the strength of a nursing research study ensures that the empirical knowledge developed through nursing research is useful in improving nursing care, the system of healthcare delivery, and patient outcomes. Additionally, nurses should use research findings when making clinical decisions on the best practice to use in order to deliver healthcare services that ensure all the patients receive safe and quality care (Melnyk et al. 2014). Therefore, determining the strength of a nursing research study helps to ensure the evidence is credible (valid and reliable) and is appropriate if incorporated into clinical practice.…

Identifying a topic of interest was the easiest part of this outcome. Further developing the topic into a research design and study was a large task. However, through the weekly reading, discussion boards, assignments and instructor feedback the task was manageable and the opportunity to learn was provided. Evidence based practice (EBP) involves the integration and analysis of primary research findings to make decisions on best practice for effective patient care (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015; Polit & Beck, 2012). These forms of research complement each other as well. Primary research is the building block for EBP inquiries. EBP research involves the analysis of multiple primary research studies to make decisions about the most effective, highest quality patient care strategies. Numerous primary studies must be completed to generate enough evidence to promote change in practice to affect patient care and contribute to a culture of evidence based practice…

On the other hand, evidence-based practice is about utilizing that evidence and applying in clinical decision making(Conner, 2014). This evidence comes from research. The purpose of evidence-based practice is to use the best available evidence when making patient-care decisions. In other words, when we encounter certain situations when providing care to our patients, there will be several different ways of solving the problem; as nurses, we must use to best one to arrive at the best possible outcomes. One important distinction between research and evidence-based practice is that evidence-based practice takes into account the patient 's preferences for interventions(Fitzpatrick, 2016).…

In Australia, Evidence-based practice (EBP) has been educated as nursing pre-registration requirements for registration, since EBP is recognized as the gold standard for quality healthcare over the past decade (Linton & Prasun, 2013; Leung, Trevena & Waters, 2016). Every day, nurses need to make a huge amount of decisions about patients’ care and procedures. However, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) publishes the Registered nurse standards for practice 1.1, which requires the registered nurse to access, analyse and use the EBP for safe quality practice (NMBA, 2016). This essay will discuss that nurses are expected to be at the forefront of implementing EBP into clinical practice. Furthermore, it will also discuss an opposing argument that why nurses may not be able to be at the forefront of implementing EBP into clinical practice.…

As we know that there is a relationship between research and practice it is imperative that nurses know what research qualifies any method that they have to put into practice In order to individualize patients’ needs instead of generalize care. What makes research so credible is because experiments are used to conclude any theories that scientists put in study. Different experiments must be performed in order to achieve the best evidence of a theory. Therefore, it is important for nurses to update their knowledge by always informing themselves about any current new researches.…

The topic that I selected is increasing the evidence based practice use. Evidence based practice (EBP) is one of the popular topics in nursing today. It is defined as a “problem-solving approach to clinical decision making within a healthcare organization that integrates the best available scientific evidence with the best available experiential evidence” (Hain & Kear, 2015, p. 2). Applying evidence based practice into our daily nursing practice can improve the quality of care of the patients.…
