Argumentative Essay Many people around the world believe that a higher power controls one’s life. This idea is often shown through art, specifically plays. In William Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare shows that the characters tragic ending is predetermined by fate.
In the prologue of the play the audience is told “a pair of star-crossed lovers take their life” and goes on to describe their love as “Death marked.” This foreshadows the later tragic events to come and that their love was both destoned to occur and end in tragedy. This begins to become evident when Romeo and Benvolio run into Peter in act ___ scene _________. Fate is evident in this scene because without the occurrence of this encounter Romeo would have been unable to read the names on the list, meaning that he would have never been aware that Roseline, the woman he was in love with at the time, would be in attendance at the Capulet’s feast, and that he would have never met Juliet. Later, in Act, _ scene _, after Mercutio is mortally wounded by Benvolio he shouts out “a plague on both your houses.” These words remind the audience of the tragic fate foretold by

Then I defy you stars!” in this line we see that Romeo has such excessive pride and confidence in himself that he believes he can fight his destiny and change what has happened, however; he evidently does not have control over his fate as he believes he does and can not fight the tragic ending of his love. Romeo’s hubris has nothing to do with the occurrences he was unaware of.
