During the middle ages women dressed very conservatively. Their skin was almost always covered up. Women clothing was influenced heavily by France, Spain and Italy. They were also influenced by queens of the kingdom. Women dressed according to their social class. The clothes that the upper class and wealthier merchants wore, was very elaborate lavishly decorated. There outfits included jewelry and the most significant difference was the emphasis on the garment sleeves. Fashion worn in royal courts was restricted by law across Europe.

Another position for women was the role of Abbess. Other positions allowed women to work from home. Jobs like spinning, weaving, and embroidery allowed women to work in or near the home so as not to neglect other duties. If you were a peasant it was common to assist your father and husband with their occupation. Women could also assist with brewing beer and wine, working on the land, and maintaining livestock.
