Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it - Robert Motherwell. During the 20th century, there were wars, economic recessions and radical politics that rattled the world. Some of the movements that came out during the time are, Cubism, Futurism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and Neo-Expressionism. Robert Motherwell’s art is classified in the Abstract Expressionism Movement. Motherwell was a writer, theorist, and helpers of the New York School of arts. His work was black paint strokes put together with shapes of bright vibrant colors that to a random passerby might seem like a mess on paper. Yet, art is what you make it and to make art takes guts and ingenuity. A world and life without the touch of art would be dull due to the lack of emotion, culture and innovators.

Due to the minds of people who had no knowledge of physics some of the greatest buildings and artifacts in the world have been created. The building that line the streets of downtown are all art. The person who invented the pottery wheel was an artist that paved the way for more artists. Even technological innovators like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs master the art of technology and pave the way for the world of today. What is bright Times Square without the hundreds of screens?
Culture is defined in its art. Culture can be related to painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, music and dance. Art is one of our earliest expressions of culture. It helped early humans to organize their lives and to understand the world around them. Art helps one to understand how we feel about life and helps us to organize our world.
