I have used a very commonly known technique that advertisers love to use; I have played on my audiences emotions. Through the use of the rhetoric device, pathos, I have shown images of children who are noticeably in pain, alone, and sick of living in bad conditions. I included a picture of a small African American girl with tears streaming down her face. She looks like she’s trying to be strong, maybe for her siblings, but she can’t hold her emotions in any longer. Two out of the three pictures I placed on the ad depict white children. This may surprise my viewers because it is a common misconception that the majority of children living in poverty or unstable homes are of the minority. This is false; it’s an eye opener that white children, who are often assumed to be of the upper class, are actually just as bad off, if not worse than other minorities. By including statistics, my audience will be assured the information presented is reliable as studies have been conducted to retrieve this data. By adding statistics to my table tent it immediately gives my topic a more logical approach. “Buzz” words like “enrich”, “dedicate”, and “hopeless” draw my audience in and have lasting effects. When a person sees these words in bold it will encourage them to continue reading to find out more about a new career option.
Lastly I have used the rhetorical appeal, ethos to achieve credibility. I included the story of a young girl, Mia Franklin, to allow my audience see a situation first hand of a child whose life has been turned around by a social worker, rather than take my word for it. This child has battled through a lot in her life and with her story being shared, the audience will likely remember it and want to prevent other acts just as this one from happening. My table tent will hopefully serve to be very effective or at the least allow students to walk away with information they did not previously
