Even though the amount of suffering was great, there were a number of groups that had great success from The Revolutionary War. Pre-war, the colonists were governed by someone other than themselves. However, following the Revolution the colonists not only had liberty but also for the first time, republican democracy. Another way that the colonists were positively affected is this event was giving them an identity. For generations, the men and women of the new world had accepted the nationality of their parents or grandparents. Following not only the Revolution, but also the French and Indian War, the term American was truly formed. Due to the outcome of the war, the slaves were given certain liberties and even freedom in the North. Virginia outlawed slavery following the writing of their first constitution in 1777 (Schultz, 2015).
