In the article “Revamping Community Colleges to Improve Graduation Rates” it talks about ways that people of education are working to help improve the graduation rate. While I am all for more people going to college and getting degrees, I do not agree with the changes that the article suggests.
One of the changes that they are trying to enforce is the idea of free college. In the article, it states that “Bills are pending to carry out President Obama’s America’s College Promise proposal to make community colleges free to responsible high school graduates.” (Tugend). I am not a fan of this proposal at all. If community college is made free it would not actually be free. They must get the money to fund it from somewhere. …show more content…
Some students who are put in these classes may take what they learn from this class to better themselves, but there will always be some that are not going to care because the class is noncredit and it will not affect them if they do badly. In The New York Times article, it says that “It became clear that small changes weren’t enough to ensure that more students graduated.” (Tugend). In the article by Luebke (2016) it states that “we’ve funneled too many young people towards a four-year degree, when the truth is that many probably would have done better elsewhere.” Not everyone has to get some fancy degree. In fact, there is a shortage in labor jobs that require half the amount of school and pay just as well. These jobs include things from welding to auto mechanics to even things such as health care. I know that there are plenty of people who would disagree with me and bring up ways on how these methods of change could improve our society. I completely understand where these people are coming from but, the fact is that those arguing against me do not have all the facts and they don’t think about repercussions that can come with the changes. Changing community colleges could increase the employment rate in America and it could also improve the number of educated workers but, at what cost? Revamping community colleges is a great idea, but it must be thought through and done in the right way to ensure success. With the changes suggested in the paper it could be the gateway to many more problems that they would have to fix. That is why I do not agree with
