Changed your life?

The experience that changed my life is related to my religion of being Catholic, as well as growing up in a Hispanic household with the stereotypical and sexist views women are placed in. Growing up I knew I wasn’t the “Normal” girl who liked talking about make-up, or wearing dresses and skirts. I wouldn’t be the girl that got excited when I got new dolls, or a nail kit. I was what we call the “Abnormal” kid. At a young age I knew I wasn’t like the other girls and I couldn’t figure out why. Growing up with a great deal of male cousins I was always rough housing with them and playing video games, even the violent ones. I like skateboarding, and playing sports with them. To my younger self I didn’t understand what I did wrong, all I did was play with my male cousins. As I grew older I had more restrictions placed on me. In some Hispanic households, the women tend to, clean, cook and wash clothing at a young age. I was told that when I succeed getting married I have got to know how to cook and I will always be required to cook for my husband. I will be obliged to clean the house and do everything on my own. "No, it’s not going to work like that" I told my mother, the husband I marry will help me with washing, cleaning and cooking. I’m not a slave, I’m a human being I have the right to do as I please. Some Hispanic households are in the same terms of sexism and stereotypes. I’m told I can't dress like a guy because I’m not one. I

We can see that within a family, it is structured to influence each other and see things as normal, and people outside of the immediate family cannot intervene because it is a personal affair. In a book written by Mirande, Mirande goes into his family life and recalls being in Tacuba where it was a small community, but what stood out to him is that he recalls a lot of commotion and the entire neighborhood gathering around his Tío Roberto’s house where there was yelling and screaming—his uncle was drunk and beating his Tía Adriana; Mirande brings up the fact that it is very unusual that another household to intervene in the private affairs of another (Mirande). In a Latino culture, often people will not intervene in personal affairs, which gives males more dominance and control over any situation because nobody is confronting them in defense of the woman. “I find that, for men, breadwinning increases infidelity. For women, breadwinning decreases infidelity.…

As I write this now, I am only 19 years of age and in the middle of my second year of college. However, I’ve been through enough throughout my 19 years of living that I’ve formulated a strong idea as to what my cultural identity is and how it affects me as a person, friend, and future educator. To start off, the biggest factor that influenced my cultural identity is race. My ethnic background is what I was born with and have been associated with my entire life from the moment I was born. Although, living life as a minority (half black/half mexican) meant that I missed out on the racial privilege that was automatically presented to white people.…

In my last class, Human Sexuality, I learned about gender roles and stereotypes. During this class I learned that some stereotypes about genders are true and some are false, they also have changed over the years because of more equality rights and some gender role reversed or have changed. I believe my gender and race helped shape me to be who I am today; furthermore, I believe my life would have turned out completely different had I been a man or different race. Growing up as a female I was expected by society and my family to behave like a lady, which meant playing with dolls, dressing up and not playing “boy” sports. I feel that there were many disadvantages being a girl because of the expectations I had to uphold.…
