Monday, I worked in the office. The manager was out this week due to surgery. However, me and the receptionist worked as a great team. She helped me to file and reorganize new and old files. We also had a lot of faxing to do. In this outpatient facility there are a lot of prescriptions and refills. It is very important that these refills are updated. If the child does not have an updated prescription they will not be able to attend therapy. I also worked with two autistic children this week. We played with blocks and kinetic sand. We worked on sharing through various games; as well as taking turns.

Tuesday, I observed an occupational therapy session. In this session, the therapist focused on things that were requested by the parent. This child has trouble seeing the board at school. The therapist created a mock classroom setting to assist the child with her visual skills. The therapist also typed words in various fonts. This would help the child to be able to recognize words in small fonts as well as bigger fonts. She also adjusted the distance of the screen and projection of the words to ensure that she could see words in

The facility has to keep the old files for a least 7 years. Me and the receptionist worked together to put each of the old files onto the computer. I did get a chance to work with a 17-year-old, who has neurological problems. We worked on hidden picture games and grip strength. Grip strength practice was also something that the parents requested. This patient sees an occupational therapist for other skills and goals. Moreover, I did not get a chance to observe the session. I mostly assist each of the patients with free time and transitioning. Free time and transitioning includes the following: playing games of his or her choice; or helping with homework. The games that this facility has, really incorporates each of the skills of occupational and speech

Temple Grandin has become widely known for her advocacy of autism and throughout the book describes medications, new treatment, and advice for teaching and mentoring those with autism. However, treatment can be controversial, overwhelming for a family and provide a false hope for a total cure. Grandin explains that there are many new drug treatments that can be helpful for those with autism, especially for problems that occur after puberty. However, she explains many medical professionals do not know how to prescribe them properly. She believes the proper use of medications is part of a good autism program but that it cannot be a substitute for the proper educational or social programs.1 There have been treatment fads and wild claims about…

As a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) my duties and responsibilities were that of offering special rehabilitation to children with any type of disorders, from speech to learning disabilities. It was to improve their overall day-to-day function in their home, and in society. Many of the children in which I treated all differed in the type of behavior they presented, the therapy and or modification of their reformation would greatly fluctuate depending on the case of each child. Each child had a set of goals that would have to be accomplished in order to reinforce the given behavior, strengthening their improvement. These objectives would be devised and instructed within the therapy setting at the clinic, but for some children the aims…

I would help him be more aware of the environment outside. I don’t think I would keep my “patients” in a building their whole life and not let them do a whole lot. I would let them do activities with each other but let them be outside. I would let them explore what the outdoors is like. I’m not sure if there are any medications that would help the Asperger’s Syndrome, but if there were, I would probably prescribe something that would help them.…

In “Handwriting Without Tears®: General Education Effectiveness Through a Consultative Approach,” author Denise K. Donica examines the value of Handwriting Without Tears® (HWT) program for use in general education kindergarten classroom. Traditionally, the HWT curriculum is implemented by the occupational therapy practitioner in one-on-one treatment sessions with students. For the study, HWT was introduced into two consecutive kindergarten classes with the teachers, instead of OT practitioners, leading handwriting exercises for 15 minutes daily. The control group was the kindergarten class from the previous year, whose students progressed to first grade. Students’ legibility at the end of the school year was compared to other students’ scores who were taught using a different teaching technique called the D’Nealian style of writing.…

Introduction Functional Communication Training (FCT) “develops alternative behaviors that are sensitive to the EOs that maintain the problem behavior” (Cooper et al., p.497); EOs are establishing operations and FCT does not seek to change EOs. FCT uses differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors (DRA) because FCT interventions help the participant to create an alternative form of communication as an antecedent to the previous problem behavior. The DRA of communication provides the reinforcer that has maintained the problem behavior (screaming, falling to the floor), which provides extinction of the problem behavior and a replacement behavior that contains the same reinforcement. “FCT can be viewed as an application of mand training”…

Consultation as an intervention. The most critical key to supporting the student’s academic success noted by Chaimaha and Chinchai (2016) was the collaboration between the occupational therapist and teacher. Villeneuve (2009) in a systematic review of therapist, teacher collaboration literature established two critical factors to successful cooperation. First, teachers need a clear understanding of the role of occupational therapy, and occupational therapist requires knowledge of school board policies, curriculum, and classroom practices to allow the occupational therapist to establish educationally relevant interventions (Truong & Hodgetts, 2017; Villeneuve, 2009). Second, educators and therapist need time for sharing of information and…

I was surprised that one main aspect of occupational therapy in a school setting focused on improving writing skills. However, a large part of Mrs. Grosch’s therapy involved field trips and social outings for the students receiving therapy, which I had not expected. I had the priveledge of participating in a field trip to a park, where 20 students with special needs were able to hike on trails and view wildlife from a lookout tower. The field trip experience was different than I had expected it to be; Mrs. Grosch made every aspect of the hike through the park related to occupational therapy. She set up swings between trees for sensory integration, and social participation was emphaszied through a game of kickball.…
