In a society, where everyone is always trying to be just like someone else, a great leader is essential. Leaders are crucial in bringing out the best and guiding their followers. A leader is someone the people look to for guidance, direction, and inspiration. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, which was written by William Golding, Ralph is someone who demonstrates these characteristics. A leader must be able to make the right decisions and have the best interest of others in mind. A leader isn’t always given the title of a leader; instead, he possesses the qualities needed to be a good leader and lives his life based on those values.

At the beginning of the novel, he is elected by the boys to be the leader. Ralph’s character is one to follow because while most of the boys were out paying and having fun, Ralph was trying to figure out what increased their chances of being rescued the most. This not only shows his character but also his compassion. It shows how much he cared about each and every person, and how badly he wanted them all to return safely. In Chapter 2, when Piggy wants to make a fire, no one agrees that it is a good idea; however, when Ralph suggests that they do it, everyone agrees. This shows that they trust him and trust what he thinks is right to do. Ralph's clear understanding of people and their needs makes him a superior leader. Ralph's understanding of the boys need for stability and order through a government and rules, prompts him to improve the society in which he is the chief. Throughout the novel Ralph is determined to get those around him as well as himself home safely.
