Field Addressing Psycho-Social Issues

Improved Essays
The extent to which I understand the differences between the fields addressing psycho-social issues such as social work, psychology, sociology, psychiatry, criminal justice or counseling are greater than expected. First and foremost, psycho-social is defined as relating to the interrelation of social factors and individual thought and behavior. (Dictionary, 2012) Thus, the difference between all these issues is the fact that they all cater for different aspects in life. For instance, psychology deals with behavior and cognitive processes, whereas, sociology deals with how various groups interact with each other. Likewise, psychiatry deals with the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, whereas, criminal justice deals with legal processes …show more content…
Upon arrival, I further questioned my advisers on the said courses. After all information was gathered, I sat and analyzed each course, along with my goals and values. As such, they both equipped me with the necessary skills; such as critical thinking, problem solving, interviewing, working within organizations, conducting groups and meetings, etc. values and the knowledge necessary to head back out to the field of work. Moreover, these majors also cater for me to engage in several internship programs to help prepare me for the world of work. Not forgetting the courses in each program are outlined to prepare me as well. For example, field instruction and/or senior seminar: Professional Development. When it comes to matching my interest, values and goals, both majors depend on each other for support. For example, one of my life long goals is to become a Criminal Justice and Social Work lecturer at the Dominica State College. After accomplishing this goal, I will then be provided with some form of personal satisfaction, success and security. Thereafter, being always on the go and engaging in positive conversations and discussing “hot topics” will better come into …show more content…
When I ponder on those two levels, individuals, families or groups that fall below these levels tend to feel more neglected and useless. Thus, they then retaliate and somehow end up in the hands of the criminal justice system. In addition, they are more prone to suffer physical, mental or emotional abuse that will then lead to suicidal thoughts or mental breakdowns, whereby, they become a victim of drug abuse and are now on the streets. This theory was derived from personal experience throughout my peer counseling days, whereby, one student dropped out of school and happened to fall into the hands of the criminal justice system all because of the lack of love, care and attention from his family. As a result of this experience, I am of the notion that family members are the most influential persons in one's life. They are the ones responsible for the nurturing and right upbringing of an individual so that they can remain on the right path of life without falling into the hands of temptation or the criminal justice system. If they fail to perform their duty, there is a diminutive chance of that individual living a normal and healthy life. On one hand, I don't have any problem in working in other work settings such as mental health, health, settings for older adults, services for people with cognitive disabilities and family planning agencies because

As a practice-heavy field, social work may not appear to place much importance on theory; however, theory should dictate every decision social workers make. Perspectives for practice include the well-known theories of psychodynamic and systems, as well as lesser-known perspectives such as existential. Though some theoretical perspectives are better suited for either a micro or macro setting only, social workers should possess a diverse and readily available knowledge of theories to aid their work in any setting. This expanded repertoire (of many, but not all theories) allows social workers the ability to apply at least one theory to literally any situation in any environment with any number of participants. To demonstrate the necessity…

Critical Analysis Paper #1 Question #1: Social Work and Systems Theory Social Work as a concept and a career is simple, yet difficult to define. Social work has grown and developed from the seed that is envelops social issues in our society. As Robbins, Chatterjee, and Canda state in Contemporary Human Behavior Theory (2012), defined situations within society have dictated the need for social work and advocates to speak on behalf of those who are unable to speak for themselves. From the inception of its career, social work has been associated with helping those in need, whether that be at a micro-level with individual therapy and case management, or a macro level with policy development and large scale advocacy efforts.…

Family can be the strongest relationship, bond or connection you can have, but it only takes one person to break the unity. In the novel, Lullabies For Little Criminals by Heather O'Neill and the memoir The Liar’s Club by Mary Karr they all show that one’s negative actions can severely impact the rest of the family, even if it is not deliberate. One’s bad behaviour can separate them and their family from society. Their uncontrollable actions can tear their families apart. In addition to that, one’s own actions can strongly influence the next generation.…

A powerful motive for pursuing social or human services work are personal experiences. I chose to study and work in substance abuse counseling because I wanted the opportunity to do for others what my counselors did for me and my family. During and after my road to recovery I had continued experiences with family and friends who have or still are struggling with sobriety. After attending different types of counseling in different settings for myself and family members it became clear to me that addiction doesn’t discriminate. Addiction doesn’t care where you came from, who you came to be, or what your dreams are.…
