This program will teach me everything I need to know in order to obtain a Licensure in Professional Counseling and also more skills and knowledge to apply to practical mental health settings. I’m aware that I will be required to do an internship as a part of the program’s curriculum which will also help prepare me to enter practical mental health settings, as well as two residencies that will give me an opportunity to interact with other students and staff, gather information to assist me with my program, and also to learn and practice basic skills that pertain to mental health…
Because I came into this counseling program to better help those individuals who suffer from addiction, I want to be able to balance my personal experience with addiction and my long history of sponsorship with my newly acquired clinical mental health counseling skills. I realize that addiction can be an amazingly difficult problem to treat. I know that it takes a strong minded, experienced sponsor to help individuals find their way to sobriety. I also believe that recovery must go beyond just being sober, and a mental health counselor is in a better position to help with compounding issues that a person who suffers from addiction faces. I want to be able to not only help a person stay sober, but help them have a fulfilling life, emotional…
After graduating with a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling, I intend on attempting the National Counselor Exam to become a National Certified Counselor and become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida. Subsequently, my focus will remain on social justice in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) community while maintaining a robust educational background in order to aid individuals who suffer with addiction. Thru the work at a local facility based housing program dedicated to persons who deteriorate from addiction and HIV, I will be better served to eventually open my own private practice and perhaps teach. However suitable my training level remains after graduation, it is necessary for me to continue my education that will afford me opportunities to mature as a professional counselor.…
Although I served as a research mentor to a few students this semester, the majority of my service came in other forms. I attempted to be a well-rounded scholar by engaging in national, university, community, college, and departmental levels of service. For instance, I serve as a reviewer for the Journal of Negro Education, which is national service to the fields of education and psychology. At the university level, I am a member of the Travel subcommittee for the Professional Development Committee (PDC). This is the end of my PDC term; however, I consistently advocated for my department and encouraged psychology faculty to apply for PDC funds.…

It is with great consideration and enthusiasm that I am applying to the Doctorate of Behavioral Health program for the Fall 2018 semester. In my undergraduate studies, I was fortunate to learn about the vast mental health issues that plague the individuals within our communities by obtaining my bachelor degree in psychology. From there, I completed my master’s degree in social work as a member of Phi Alpha National Social Work Honor Society. After earning my master’s degree from Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, I worked for four years in multiple physical health clinics and inpatient psychiatric facilities with both doctors and mid-level providers as a licensed clinical social worker. It was during this time that I discerned the…
“Can you please remove my ear drums for few hours, I do not want to hear these voices anymore.” This was the response a patient on my psychiatry rotation gave when asked about her goal for her hospitalization and it initiated my intrigue in the field. From an early age, I always had a endless curiosity about people; why we do what we do, and the circumstances that cause us to be who we are. Over the years, my interest in the subject merged with my passion for helping others, particularly those with mental health issues, who are are disproportionately underprivileged. Moreover, those same disadvantaged people are more likely to experience worsening of their condition as a result of their limited access to mental health resources.…
The reason I am pursuing admission to the Masters of Science in psychology at Cal Southern University is that I believe that good mental health is the foundation of a both a healthy individual and a healthy community. My goal is to get be awarded a PSY.D and ultimately a licensed therapist in California so that I can help others by increasing mental health in the community. I have had the opportunity to observe and be a member of many teams, groups, cultures, and organizations that have had both good and bad mental health. These experiences have shown me the profound impact that mental health of the individuals has on the communities to which they belong. It is my intent to add value to society by helping the individual members reach a healthy state in which they are empowered to reach their full potential.…

Psychological disorders and mental health issues in today’s society affect many people in a variety of ways. Many people in society are often stigmatized and labeled because of a psychological disorder shunning them from society, the work place, schools, friends, and more. However, recently through my research I see how many people are working their jobs, handling their careers, never stop working and aspiring with their goals, and face varied challenges at home, work, and out socially using a variety of therapies from medications, to psychologist visits, and even psychotherapy. There are over four hundred types of psychological disorders.…

Like every child, I went through the ubiquitous “why” stage where I posed this question even to the smallest, most mundane events of life. Filled with genuine curiosity and fascination, I desired to understand the ornate workings of the world. Unlike the majority of children, however, I did not lose this fervor and drive to find answers. This inquisitiveness laid the foundation for my interest in research work. Growing up, my family placed a tremendous emphasis on health, fitness, and nutrition.…
When I was a child I had no notions of becoming a doctor; my favorite toy wasn’t a red, plastic stethoscope, but perhaps the fact that I did not discover Psychiatry until clinical rotations I immediately realized its amazing potential and felt a sense of connection. Not only have I always loved talking to people, but I am a natural listener and often, in even seemingly casual conversations, have heard subtle changes in voice that have led me to believe that this person was troubled despite being enthusiastically engaged and firmly believing no one could see their inner pain. When I realized that the core of this specialty required fine-tuned communicative abilities in tandem with a wealth of specialized knowledge to deal with the gamut of mental disorders and to sympathetically yet professionally demonstrate that you are only seeking to help, I knew then that I was meant to become a psychiatrist. Psychiatry is about understanding patients at their deepest levels and, in that every patient brings their own unique challenges, I know it will lead to a professional life of ongoing growth allowing me to become increasingly more effective in treatment.…
When I was younger I wanted to be many different things like a teacher, a veterinarian, a model and about everything else a little girl could want to be. After researching the right career for me I stumbled upon being a psychiatrist, after I looked into it I knew it was the right career for me. I chose this career because I love helping people, and being a psychiatrist is all about helping people. One of the main skills required for this job is listening and I am a great listener. In psychiatry it is important to know how to work through other people's problems under pressure, which is a skill that I can say I have.…
