Trusting that your co-worker will be on time to relieve you from your shift or trusting that your nurse will answer your call light in a timely manner is something that is earned by that person by showing you they can be counted on. Trusting that someone will maintain your confidentiality and trusting that they are giving the best care they can is due to that persons’ knowledge of their profession and the consistency of their actions. For a professional environment to be maintained, you must earn the trust of the people around you. Part of trust being earned is communicating with clients in a therapeutic manner. If a client or their family expresses concern, asking them “why” does not promote feelings of trust. Therapeutic communication starts with accepting people, asking them to tell you how they feel and validating that person’s feelings and then helping them to work past the pain, fear or even celebrating the good, and if that problem is out of our scope of practice, referring them to the right professional.
