One scene strikes out to the angle of the camera and that is the scene with the dove being sacrificed. The camera angle suggests that the hat pin is pushed into the side of the live bird. The scene was done in cuts using both the real and fake dove. The sound effects of Practical Magic are used to indicate foreshadowing of an ominous and monumental action that is about to take place. The thunder clap that frightens the sisters as they are resurrecting Jimmy serves as a warning that they are about to do an act that is going not bode well for the sisters. In the scene where Gilly is free from her ex-boyfriend fortissimo sound effect signals a powerful freeing of her from Jimmy’s soul that possess her. The lighting of Practical Magic is consistent with the interpretation of magic in general and the connection of romance displayed in the movie. Magic is viewed as a dark, somber, sinister, even evil practice filled with devil-worship and the lighting is symbolism to the view of witchcraft. By the same token, the dark lighting is used to exemplify romance for despite the curse the sisters are still on the quest for love. This specific film has not only piqued interest worth merit, but also has been a true inspiration of acceptance of all religious practices with acting, sets and location that excel in quality and degree, plus the lighting, camera angles, and sound effects brilliantly placed to indicate foreshadowing and intensity of emotion. Overall, the rating of this film should be a five-star rating and highly recommended for not just individuals but it is a great family film rating at PG-13.
