This technique is used by the author to suggest something in the future that will happen. In a way, it is a warning that the reader will understand once the event that was being “warned” has already occurred. The author will give subtle hints to “tease” the reader about a plot twist that will happen later. Foreshadowing is most used in fiction, for example in “The Cask of Amontillado” by Poe. The narrator hints at the fate of his “friend” by explaining what a shame it would be if his friend were to die. When rereading the story, it is easier to pick up on foreshadowing since you know the plot twist already. The reader will know this relates to the plot twist being that the wake is for him; therefor it makes sense that everyone would know him. Particularly, 3rd person point of view does not follow just one person, but gets an overview of everyone. This point of view leaves the audience in question about what the characters are thinking and usually will involve a plot twist. In “The Lottery” the POV is third person omniscient, meaning the narrator is detached from the story and does not know the character’s thoughts-one of the best decisions made by the author. It is best we cannot hear character’s thoughts so the reader is unaware of the anxious and paranoid thoughts that each character is having while drawing a possible ticket to death. I used third person point of view here so the audience is unaware that the main character is ironically going to his own wake. Inside Jacobs head, he is aware the wake he is going to is his own, but the audience is left to question it. Aside from stories read in class, “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant shows the same point of view. It was important to use third person in this because there could be no judging each character’s actions when they make an unfavorable decision. Although 3rd person POV has strengths and weaknesses, it was a successful literary technique used in “The Lottery” as well as my
