The event that helps the plot is the flashback of Madam Giry helping the Phantom getting out and hiding from the people that were hurting him in his life. This event expresses the pity that she had for him and the fear she had of him getting hurt more. The phantom lives in the Opera House his entire life and she doesn’t want anyone to know where he lives or to hurt him anymore because the Phantom doesn’t know any better. The plot that was expressed in this part is that fear and to make people around the Phantom have pity for him to make them fear him.
