Texting while driving is a cause that has a lot of negative effects. Along with many commercial advertisements from cellphone companies disparaging the idea of texting and driving, there are many laws in place in different states to ensure texting while driving isn’t a common activity. Currently, forty-one states in the United States of America have a law in place preventing texting while driving. (Bushak) Not only is using your cellphone in the car unsafe, but it can become detrimental to the driver, the passengers, other drivers, or pedestrians.

More than 3,000 teens die from texting while driving in a given year. For instance, residential areas have a lot of kids outside playing and people going on runs. If a driver is texting his girlfriend and isn’t paying attention because he is looking at his phone to make dinner plans, he could potentially run a stop sign and hit a child at play or a runner. If he drives a 2016 Cadillac Escalade with a V8 engine and 420 HP, or a large vehicle like it, it could result in a fatal accident for the pedestrians. If a girl named Rachel gets a text about the party at Jeremy’s tonight on her iPhone 6 plus from her friend while driving in her Toyota Corolla, she wouldn’t be focused on the road because she would be texting back her RSVP. Her sister is in the backseat and before you know it, Rachel and her sister ram into the back of a school bus. Not only do Rachel and her sister need to be rushed off to Mease Countryside hospital, but the kids sitting in the back of the school bus also got injuries in their legs from the collision.
