Persuasive Essay 16: The Right Voting Age

Improved Essays
The Right Voting Age In the persuasive argument, “16: The Right Voting Age”, by the National Youth Rights Association, the writers insist that the right age to vote is 16 years old. As the authors’ put it, “Young people have strong views about the environment. But they have no voice in determining the leaders who must protect it” (450). In making this comment, writers argue that young people have the strong opinion about the environment, do not know have the right to choose their president to protect them. I agree that youths know about the environment, but they do not have the voice to vote to choose a leader for them, a point that needs emphasizing because so many youths care to vote for the environment, but they cannot choose the leader

“The Supreme Court held, with considerable disagreement, that the federal 18-year-old voting age requirement is valid for national elections, but not for State or local elections.” The Checks and Balances worked very well in this case. The Legislative branch made the law to where all voting age was 18-years-old in National, State, and local elections. The Executive branch enforced the law, and then the Judicial branch interpreted and checked the law and ended up sending it back. The Justices said that only the States, and not the Congress, have the authority to establish the qualification rules for voters in State and local elections.…

When someone turns 18 years old the first thing you hear from your parents or an adult is “you can finally vote”, but do people really know what that means? Teenagers are just excited about being 18. They don’t really think about being able to vote because no one really prepares them for it, at least that’s what I felt when I turned 18. When it came to voting I really did need to know what the Electoral College really does. What I found was that everyone in the United States doesn’t really vote for the president they want directly.…

In America, citizens are given the right to vote and elect officials into office. At the age of eighteen, young adults are allowed to register to vote and take part in elections. Not all citizens participate and decide to vote. When Americans decide to exclude themselves from voting, they initially are negatively impacting society. Thomas Patterson takes his stance on this when he wrote “The Vanishing Voter”.…

According to an article on The Cincinnati Enquirer, studies have shown that voting is a habit to begin early. It was found that if people don’t start out as voters when they are young, they are less likely to ever vote. One of these studies included a Yale University study in which it was discovered that students shown how to operate a voting machine were more than twice as likely to vote as students who weren’t shown. Lowering the voting age would both increase voter turnout and further educate citizens about the voting process, in turn causing them to vote more responsibly than some young adults today. It is for these reasons that I strongly believe that the voting age in the United States should be lowered to sixteen years of age.…

It has also been found that many young adults register and vote in order to appease their guardians. Yet, many young voters have not had enough experience with these political campaigns in order to ensure they have made an educated vote. In total, a well-educated vote means more than a forced, unknowing vote. A local government teacher took his stance on the subject when he stated, “Let me take my educated vote and let it mean something rather than you deciding our future blindly.” Many Americans would agree with this statement as some who vote…

Voting Age Respond FCA’s 1 page long I think that the voting age should increase from 18 years to almost 20-21 years. In the beginning the voting age was 21 years but later on it decreased because of the Vietnam War in World War II. In the 1970 case Oregon v. Mitchell the Supreme Court ruled that Congress had the right to regulate the minimum age in federal elections; however, not at local and state level. At the age of 18 some teens get emotional sometimes; moreover, they make decisions very fast and don’t even think about it before making the decision of doing it.…

Drinking alcohol is popular among most adults although it is not legal in every state to drink as soon as the proclaimed age of adulthood is reached. Personally I believe that the age should be lowered because upon turning eighteen years old so many new laws and regulations apply such as the right to vote and being able to serve in the military. Increasing the age has created more cases of underage drinking and illegal sales of alcohol to minors. The legal drinking age was raised to 21 because of the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984. This stated that if a state did not enforce the legal drinking age of 21 that state would lose up to ten percent of their current highway spending from the federal government.…

Raising Drinking Age Have you ever thought what the world would be like if the drinking age was raised to 25? For me, I know it would be a great thing to do. People who are alcoholics probably won’t be happy but it isn’t really about them but it’s more about the safety of this world. According to a recent report, 63% of people that are aged around 18-24 say the drink to get drunk and 35% say that the aren’t able to stop drinking once they have started.…

According to NIH (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism), 5,000 people under the age of 21 die each year due to alcohol-related accidents, such as car wrecks, suicides, alcohol poisoning, homicides, burns, falls, and drownings("Under-aged”). However, think of the young men and women who have died to fend for our country, and not being able to have that first drink with their father, or go out and drink with their friends. Yes drinking can be dangerous in situations, but I believe that if a young man or woman can go die for their country, or even be able to make the important decision on who will lead our country. Then at the age of 18 we should be able to drink alcohol if we want. It can help teach responsibility and help us get through tough…

In the United States, currently citizens are worrying about Cecil the lion, but they should be thinking about issues that affect their everyday lives. One of these issues includes voting, in Kenneth T. Walsh’s article “Voting Rights Still a Hot-Button Issue” speaks about how President Johnson signed a law in 1965 to right a wrong, but politicians are continuing to debate this idea still. This law is being over ridden by Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder, some states who have had histories with voting related discrimination “pre-clear” any of the voting law changes that may be made. This allows for nine states to change their voting laws without prior approval. There are some states that have been imposing more restrictions on voting, but are stating that they are trying to prevent voter fraud, and are not discriminating.…

Teenagers can do really audacious things, and this is a sign that the should not be able to decide on a leader for our country. “Fourteen-year-olds can barely make decisions on what they are going to wear in the morning, let alone who should lead the country. ”(“Heim, Joe”).These children are obviously not ready to have this big of an opportunity. To end, you can conclude that these teens should not be able to vote because they need to mature before they can start voting. To sum things up, I am on the negative side of my resolution resolved:the voting age in America should be lowered to age 14.…
