Personal Narrative-The Great Plains

You always hear about great legends, no matter where you are from. All my life I had heard about a great monsters who used to roam The Great Plains in Texas, but none of the stories matched the monster I had found. I lived in a small quaint house right outside of a town in the middle of the Texas Plains. Most of the townsfolk were superstitious. My mother was a carefree and spirited woman who let me roam the flat land, not troubled by the hideous monster myths. Many people thought my mother was a witch who communicated with the dark beasts and that was why she let me run free, but in truth she was just a happy hippie who believed that the so called monsters were misunderstood, gentle creatures. The day was darker and stormier than any other day in the history of our little town. My mother was acting strange. “Doll, don't go out today,” her irritated voice sounding so unlike the mother I knew and loved. “Why not? I'll be fine, Mother. You shouldn't worry.” “No don't!” …show more content…
I picked up a random book, opened to the middle, and read. “What do you mean I can't go out anymore?” This book was not helping. I carefully climbed out my window. I needed to go to my special place. The wind blew fiercely making my hair knot and rat with tangles. I sat down in the middle of the pasture, my horse grazing beside me. The fierceness of the wind did not frighten me, nor did the howl of the dark trees. To me, it was all rather peaceful, a part of my home. I pondered as to why Mother had not wanted my to go out and could not think of one reason. The rain started to pound. “My gosh! It's raining like cats and dogs! Come on horse, let's go home.” The decision to go home was a terrible

As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to avoid the skyrocketing temperature and finish before the sun became the determining factor in the success of our venture.…

The sidewalk beneath my feet has begun to erode away, pieces of rock and fragmented cement escaping onto the barren street. Weeds have sprouted between the cracks, and bright-yellow dandelions poke their faces towards a dull, overcast sky. My sister is dragging her feet. The soles of Layna’s shoes roll against the grit, and the grating noise gnaws away at my unravelled nerves.…

One of the first things I remember about going on that trip is looking down at my feet and thinking that I would die if I fell. I was nine and very light-headed at the time. It was the winter of 2009 and one of the first times I had ever gone to Colorado. The drive there took about 6 hours from our house so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting out of the car as an inpatient nine-year-old. We were renting a small two story log cabin with a hot tub on the second- floor balcony from a family that had a winter home somewhere in Florida.…

A storm raged outside, and on the inside of the house, just as much chaos took place. There sat Alice, six years old, huddled in a closet with her Mamaw and four young cousins. A mixture of crying and yelling came from the cousins, who no longer wanted to sit in the stuffy closet. The sharp voice of Alice’s Mamaw rose above the noise to snap orders such as, “Sit down and be quiet!” in an effort to hear the weatherman on the TV.…

When I meet a new person in London their first question is “Where are you from?” This is mostly because I am clearly not British, nor European. People often assume I’m American, at which point I have to patiently explain that I am Canadian, no I don’t live in an igloo, but my parents do drive their snowmobiles to work sometimes… The second question is “Where in Canada are you from?” Then I tell them about being from a small town in Ontario, but that I actually spent the last few years living and working in the Rocky Mountains.…

America. The land of the American Dream, where we tell ourselves anything is possible if you work hard enough. In the beginning it was achievable for the middle class, but as time went on, it lived up to its name and for the vast majority it did indeed become a dream. Living beyond one’s means became the norm and we became a nation of hustlers. This unmistakably is why we are where we are today, a nation with one of the lowest unemployment rates, and highest GDP per capita.…
