Personal Narrative: The Beach

A few years ago, I was out on New Melones Reservoir fishing with a couple of my childhood friends. We found ourselves far upriver, past the two bridges, with steep canyon walls surrounding us. The sheer vertical cliffs stretched on for miles. There are just a few breaks where the rocks have collapsed due to rainwater that flows down the hillside. This creates a slide. If someone, or something happened to enter the water, the only way out would be to use one of these washed out rocky areas.
It is quite an amazing place to be. The walls seem to absorb all sound, the air is still and if you take a moment to listen, you can hear a random bird in the distance. Sometimes you can even hear a whistle in the wind or the thoughts in your mind as they are being processed. Other than that, it is near complete silence.
Being the only ones in the area (so we thought) we were casting, laughing and having a good time. Then over our shoulders we heard a peculiar sound and immediately grew silent. We looked behind and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Some trees sticking out of the water, or what looked like a snag or scattered driftwood floating. We then turned to each other with a befuddled look on our faces, almost questioning ourselves and our sanity. After a short pause, there it was again. A grunt? Only this time it was

It was not a snag or driftwood in the water. It was a giant black bear approaching the boat. When I say approaching the boat, I mean, swimming right at us. Quickly we scrambled to escape certain attack. We turned the electric trolling motor on high and proceeded to flee. After a couple seconds, we realized that the bear was not traveling at a threatening speed. Nor was it trying to eat us. We just happened to have the boat positioned to where it was blocking one of these slide areas, which was the only escape route from the water for the bear. We politely moved to the side and let the bear pass, as if we had another

Only the scent remains of the massacre. The fog on the beach softens the horizon and all the palm trees around me. Everything has a greenish tint to it, and I pull my blanket closer around me. Technically it's Alex's, but the blanket seems to have become mine slowly and now it's my home. Even though I don't think fish make sounds, I can hear their cry ringing out.…

and I felt something hit the lure, I waited a couple minutes and something hit the lure again, I set the hook and the rod bent and the fish fought back. I was reeling and reeling and I finally saw it and grabbed it, it was a walleye, I had to watch out for the teeth because they are sharp and they hurt if they bite you. It kind of surprised me because people have told me that there is only flathead catfish back there. I think it was at least a 3 pound walleye, I caught a couple more walleye then put them on the stinger I had with me.…

When I was young in Mastic Beach, we spent Saturday mornings on the porch eating pancakes made by mom and naming all the birds that flew by. When I was young in Mastic Beach, the scent of paint lingered on dads clothes as he taught me how to make the images in my head appear on the canvas in front of me. The clay he brought home already sculpted into figures and applauded no matter how unrecognizable they actually were. When I was young in Mastic Beach, we made frequent trips to the beach at sunset and stayed well into the night, not caring about the mosquito bites that littered our bodies.…

During the summer of 2015, my older brother Colin, took me on an incredible trip spearfishing off the coast of Florida. I’ve never been a fan of just throwing a line in the water and waiting; it has always been too passive of an activity for me to completely enjoy. Finally, I would be able to get into the water and bring the fight to the fish. The first thing we needed to get was a fishing license from the State of Florida’s department of Fish and Game. We were able to easily download two of the Saltwater/Freshwater Fishing Combo licenses on our phones for a mere thirty-two dollars each.…

One of the ways to escape from these nasty creatures is to jump in a lake. Or hide behind a tree. A big one. Because if the shark tries to take a bite out of a tree and the tree is bigger than the sharks mouth can reach, then it will spend hours upon hours trying to gnaw at the tree until it dies or it succeeds.…

Each year, a pilgrimage to the Florida or Alabama gulf coast is a highly anticipated and enjoyed event for my family. In the beginning, it was just my wife and I. Man oh man, these trips were some of the most relaxing times that I can remember. Now, our yearly “beach fest” includes our two children, Kaylee and Garrett. While this is still a wonderful family event, I no longer use the phrase “relaxing”. Elbert Hubbard once said, “No man needs a vacation so much as the man who just had one”.…
