Personal Narrative: My Role As A Customer Assistant

Improved Essays
I was working at on the Chicago Transit Authority, (CTA) train station in the customer assistant service department. My job responsibilities included assisting customers with directions and handling of emergency situations, monitoring and handling elevator entrapments, as well as viewing camera film. I assisted and helped people who have fallen on the tracks, dropped things on the tracks. Sometimes my job would just consist of helping people get to their destinations, but mainly the thing I mentioned as well and documenting and reporting incidents.
My official title was Customer Assistant and often I was the first responder for any emergency situation. There was one specific situation that stands out as a good leadership situation. I was working the night shift, 130 am to 9am, those night could be quiet, but sometimes you had to deal with suspicious people, people who wanted to ride free, this particular night a very serious situation arose, it was a robbery situation. A man and his wife, plus two children had parked close to the train station, they had gone to go see a movie and upon coming back to their vehicle were robbed by an armed gunman who stole their vehicle. The man who stole the vehicle also shot the father. I quickly contacted the police, as I watched the gunman pull the weapon on the family and made sure to take the license plate down, and also the maker of the vehicle and what direction the vehicle went in. Upon the father being shot, I cleared the area, which were a few individuals, and contacted an ambulance and the police. I kept the pressure on the wound and took directions from 911 until the police and an ambulance arrived at the station. I also did my very best to keep the family calm by talking to them, asking questions and constantly giving encouragement. The father's life was saved and the police were able to locate the vehicle and arrest the thief. I received a certificate of excellence from my company and the police said my quick thinking and attention to detail saved the father's life and helped them quickly locate the guilty party responsible. The situation was initiated by a young man down on his luck who thought his only way out of his problems was to take from others rather than do things the right way. Because of the leadership I showed in this situation, they offered me a job in the main office in which I would help maintain the order of the other workers. There are a number of different leadership styles such as authoritarian leadership style, these are leaders who believe in a direct style of leadership, which maintains direct control and are focused on efficiency and getting the job done with little to no input from subordinates (Bawany, 2015).

I would classify myself as Authentic leaders, who motivates and inspire followers, one who is honest, that make great moral judgments and, I have my priories and values and belief in order, a leader have to inspire trust (Zimmer, 2015). Leaders must have the ability to guide and motivate and organize groups and teams, and lead them to problem-solving skills, a leader has to be filled with respect, organization goals and making positive changes (Bawany, 2015).There are many different leadership styles that can be used to achieve the same goal. One particular method of leadership may not be any better than the other, but may suit the specific situation at a specific job site or organization. This type of leadership style generally deals in a one way top down type of power structure and communication type. Then there is the democratic leadership style, which means any leader or head of a group or any organization in a company that shares the decision-making power with members of the organization (Bawany, 2015). A democratic leadership mainly focused on social equality. This style of leadership holds the belief that all stakeholders within an organization should have a say in the group’s decision-making; this style of leadership has been shown to be extremely effective (Lowe, 2014). There is the lasissez-fair style of leadership, which is also considered democratic in that it deals with

My leadership experience began when my supervisor and his colleagues had an important meeting to attend and had no one sitting in on the office for intake office hours, so he asked me and another intern, Isaiah, to sit in from 9 AM-3PM. My supervisor taught us the main component of this position in 10 minutes. At first, I was nervous because I was new to the agency and it was my first time performing front desk duties. But after a couple of clients I began to get more comfortable and confident with the process because I had performed similar duties when I was in my cubicle. At this moment I felt like I was a leader because I was put in a position where I had minimum training, but still could take control of the office duties, and according to my supervisor, my performance level was beyond expectations.…

I have always been interested in learning and using new ideas. Throughout my life, I have invariably drawn from my life experiences, newly learned ideas and my continuing education to help problem-solve sensibly and realistically allowing me to move forward or help others reach their goals. Although I have no formal teaching experience, in my past work and involvement in organized sports, I have repeatedly used the Progressive philosophy. When dealing with 13 & 14 year olds many situations arise such as bullying, personality clashes or simply not understanding a drill or play. I deal with these situations by asking questions to stimulate a discussion, allowing them to draw on past experiences; positive or negative, consequently allowing them to come up with a solution or grasp the knowledge they are seeking.…

At one organization I used Microsoft Publisher to create a color coded grid for Draft Day activities with leadership responsibilities and I identified an online software program for creating organizational charts. At one of the organizations I recommended a change to the expense form and the accounting department approved and implemented the change. At one of the…

In terms of leadership style, I would consider myself more towards social leadership that focused more on teamwork, resolving disputes and providing support (Myers, 2013). Instead of directing the other group members on what to do, I distributed my authority with my group members by giving them the opportunity to voice their ideas as well as involving them in decisions making processes. I believed that group members felt more appreciated when their suggestions were acknowledged which then enhanced more creative and productive thoughts. This was due to the fact that brainstorming that involved the entire group encourages and stimulates ideas from different individuals (Nemeth, Personnaz, Personnaz & Goncalo,…
