Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

The crisp breeze rustled my hair as I walked out of my house on the fall September day with my dad drilling instructions into my head. It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. The car ride from my house was only a few minutes away from the fields where I would begin my baseball career.…

How to Survive on the Streets When I lost my job, I was forced to leave my accommodation and became homeless in a matter of minutes. With no family to turn to, I ended up on the streets. Having lost my job due to misunderstanding (I think my job was a massive homophobe), I was unable to pay bills and rent, leading to my eviction from my apartment in 2013. I ended up living on the streets for a lengthy period of time. Drawing was how I passed my time.…

Many times in my life I have lived in fear, fear of living in my own community. Communities completely different to where I currently live in. These were communities that revolved around the idea of theft and violence. Were neighbors don’t even think twice about helping or interacting with each other. Thought since moving to our current home three years ago, my family and I have used the concept of rhetoric by helping improve our community, such as being a vital part of our neighborhood committee or by doing community service.…

When I first came here in Canada, I had no friend or family that I could rely on, so I was so eager to get new friends to gain a sense of belonging. That was the time I hung out with some international students. We were partying, playing billiards and staying up all night. I enjoyed it at first because I felt like home, with friends having fun together, but it didn’t last for long. I started to realize the parties took over my life, but I knew if I stopped hanging around with them, they would kick me out of the “group”.…

Growing up, I lived in quite a few places as a result of my parents’ divorce. The neighborhood I lived most of my life, and still live in, is in New Market, Maryland. I live with my father on a tranquil golf course surrounded by large evergreens, close to a large lake known as Lake Linganore. I have always loved living here, especially when the wind would pick up and breeze through the trees and the crisp blades of the manicured grass. My favorite activity is to walk with my dog along the golfing path, and observe the scenery of the landscape with the forested mountains along the horizon.…

    How Places Shape Identity

Brown-Saracino (2015) argues in “How Places Shape Identity” that the current conception of how place shapes identities, i.e. through region, location, and institution, does not aptly describe how identities vary in places that are similarly situated. Instead, she asserts that there are three loosely grouped sets of place elements that affect how identity is shaped by place: numbers and acceptance, place narratives, and encounters with socioscape. Brown-Saracino (2015) refers to numbers and acceptance as a broad category encompassing the safety, acceptance, integration and distribution of LBQ women, which she claims orient the extent to which the women in each city participate in identity politics. Place narratives and encounters with socioscape…

Last Place I have enjoyed playing basketball ever since I was a young lad – which is quite a good thing, because I would otherwise sit around all winter doing next to nothing, most likely. It is not that I feel accomplished when I am being lazy. The fact that wresting is really not my thing would be the root of me rarely doing productive things during these cold months if I did not play basketball. I once saw myself as a wrestler, but I am sure my parents and all of my other supporters did not, even though they sometimes acted like I had hope in the sport.…
