We were close to the Cherokee Nation, so I decided to go visit Lucy. As I was there, I helped the mother cow nurse her child. There were Union soldiers near the house making fun of me for helping the rebel family. One man tried to swing at me, so I beat him up. His friends then joined him, and had fought with three men. Lucy helped me by attacking one of the men with a pitchfork. Afterwards, I had a cut on my face, and my buttons fell off of my coat. Lucy fixed them for me. She was fast at sewing. Lucy and I talked about the war. We were very different, and had different perspectives about the war. I told Lucy about the Declaration Of Independance, but that didn't seem to change her mind about the war. She wanted slavery, and felt like states should decide whether slavery should be allowed. While we were talking, she seemed to get upset. She poked her finger, and ran crying. Lucy's mother had told me that Lucy was upset because her brother Lee Washbourne had been missing for two weeks. Lucy and her brother were close, but how would I help a rebel a family. The Union couldn't even keep track of their missing
