Personal Narrative: My Case Of Losing A Pet

Improved Essays
I have always held a special place in my heart for pets. I don’t think of pets as just pets; they are part of the family. We fight, play, eat, and grow together for part of our lives. Sometimes I like my pets more than my family members! So when the time comes to say goodbye for good, it is one of the worst things to happen. You may think that I’m being over-dramatic, but in actuality I’m not. You lose a piece of yourself when you lose someone you love, even in the case of losing a pet.
Shelly was a remarkable cat and by far my favorite. Sure, many owners think that their cat is the best cat in the world, but Shelly was special in her own ways. Shelly would personally see to it that I was in bed at a certain time when I was little. She would

I just stood there petting her and continued to tell her that I loved her and I that I was sorry. The last thing I remember seeing was her looking at me and making a soft meowing sound before she closed her eyes for the last time. I knew I was crying at that point and when I felt her stop moving. I felt so much grief and I didn’t quite understand why it hurt so much. I had lived through my grandparents funeral and sure I had been upset, but it was nothing compared to how I felt at that time. Even now, writing this is hard. I think back to that day and all the sadness of that day comes to mind. Anyone who has experienced the loss of a pet understands how you feel when you lose a pet.
There is also the few people who haven’t lost a pet or even owned a pet. Some people say, “Why don’t you just go get another pet?” or, “Why are you so upset? It was only a pet not your grandparents who died”. It’s not that easy though; it takes a bit of time to get over losing a pet. Over the years that you had that pet and lived together, you formed a type of routine or bond. You get up together and eat together, leave your pet alone for a few hours, then come home to them waiting for you and then you relax together in a chair. You know each other and you feel connected

Hal Herzog explains, “So the theory that people love pets because they make us feel needed” (Herzog). Pets in general are sometimes used as a helpful tool in our lives. Based off of research done on depression by HABRI, short for The Human Animal Bond Research Initiative, states, “The comfort that these animals provide is beneficial” and “Pets are always “on tap” with their unconditional love and are a wonderful cure for loneliness” (HABRI). So when you have a bad day at work or you just feel lonely, your pet will be there to help you. He or she will try to make you smile in their own special way. I still remember when I was upset or in a bad mood, Shelly seemed to know and would try to make me smile by rolling around on the floor or trying to get as close as possible to my face to give a

In fact,, yet I had not felt this level of grief. Was there something wrong with me, or was I experiencing something akin to what one might feel when losing a child? Young Gismo Bewildered and curious about this“That was a theme I heard consistently in my group, that people were grieving more for their pet than they ever did for their parents, sibling, or friend, that the grief they felt for their animal was like no other grief,” Betty said. “That’s because of the relationship we have with our animals — it’s unconditional love, it’s deep, and it doesn’t carry all the baggage that human relationships carry.…
