Personal Narrative: London Tipton

Improved Essays
London Tipton was the only Asian character on TV that I had to look up to as a kid. She was selfish, unappreciative, inconsiderate, and not very smart. Disney might have been trying to curb stereotypes with a rich, dumb Asian, but I had to grow up with only one character who had a similar face, but nothing I could aspire to be. I have distinct memories of pressing the sides of my bulb-shaped nose in front of the mirror for hours as if my efforts would amount to a button nose so many girls had on TV. I grew up very bitter, sorry to say.

My mom once told me, “Sometimes, I can’t tell if you’re Vietnamese or American.” It was said in jest; she just didn’t understand why I didn’t like egg rolls, but it still struck a chord in me. As upset as I was, I couldn’t fault her for it because I had the same problem. I continue to have this problem. This constant rejection of my race and culture during my childhood has left me without a concrete identity and I feel, as Katy Perry once sang, like a plastic bag floating in the wind. School, where I spend most of my time, doesn’t help me with this either.

Not to knock on my school, but when the Muslim Student Association launched the Covered Girl Challenge as an opportunity for any girl who wants to learn the significance of the hijab and the backlash that comes with wearing it, my old principal caved into the bigotry outside of the school and canceled what should have been a big step forward in combating racism, most specifically, islamophobia. Now, I’m not a Muslim so this cancellation didn’t impact me as much as it would have if I were one, but I found it rather disheartening that although my school was quick to proclaim its pride in diversity, it allowed bigots to

This day and age it is uncommon for you not to have a smartphone with 4G wireless boosts and ten thousand different appliances that connect to the ever so wonderful wireless unit. Whenever I am uncomfortable or in an awkward situation I find myself looking at my phone, hoping that someone will text me or that Facebook will give me something that could fill that void that I feel when I am uncomfortable or feeling awkward. I find that I could relate to Lamott when this happens to me. Lamott writes, "I felt like I found the secret to life." (222) I feel the same way when I could successfully avoid the awkward eye contact in half empty elevator.…

With every passing moment, I became more distant with my Vietnamese heritage and become closer with my desire for an American one. I wanted nothing to do with being Vietnamese or Asian because all that it had brought me was a sense of inferiority and constant bullying. My desire to suppress my Vietnamese identity brings up a point that is brought up by Ms. Mori, the protagonist’s friend with benefits. During one of their conversations, she asks, “So why are we supposed to not forget our culture?…

My parents left India many decades ago and moved into the New Jersey suburbs so my brother and I could grow up in America and receive an American education. When it came to our education my parents never had any restrictions to what they were willing to do or what they were willing to give up; I was sent to Saturday school, tutoring sessions, summer camp, SAT prep, anything that bolstered my college resume. It’s because of this selflessness that I grew up in a town that can only be accurately labeled as an upper-middle class, catholic, white community, in which we were the only Indian family. It had one of the best school districts in the area, which made the absurd property tax a nonissue for my parents.…

The readings focused on the formation of identities and the ways in which societal norms impacts treatment of those people due to their identity (Lee, Orozco, Blando, & Mizelle-Johnson, 2014). In my opinion, it is impossible to go through life without an identity—especially a cultural one. Identities allow a person to understand themselves and the world around them. It has been my experience that an identity can evolve over time. For example, when I was a child I identified as just an American, blonde-haired girl; but now my identity has evolved to include a variety of identifiers.…

This is unacceptable treatment towards a twelve year old boy, and sadly he is not the only one suffering. Unfortunately, “the process of blaming students of color for their own oppression” is a practice that is “long-standing” within our schooling institutions (Cite). This shows that there is a large problem that needs to be addressed. This shows how the great country of the United States may not be as great as previously thought.…

Growing up, I lived in a close-knit community where the majority of the families around me were Hmong families.…

Kyle Wong Asian American Studies San Francisco State University December 8th, 2016 Vietnamese Youth and Heritage Culture is something in America that is as diverse as its people. Through social media websites, advertisements on TV and online, and social interactions, the people, specifically youth, have picked up many different cultures’ habits and way of life. These habits and ways of life have a positive impact on oneself, for instance, partaking in the consumption of different ethnicities food, and thus expanding one’s palate. However, it is because of this absorption of many varying cultures that the youth of today has lost their own heritage, that is to say, their roots. Many youths of today, especially those of Vietnamese descent, have…
