I have a dream that one day everyone will have the opportunities to go to school and college and get a career. My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

I began working on my flexibility when I was only a year old--I did the splits across the Atlantic Ocean. With one foot in Bulgaria and one in America, I had to learn to hold my stretch for months at a time. Soon after I was carried, swaddled, and sung to on the flight into the United States, I learned to walk and speak English. I have PBS Kids and Looney Tunes mostly to thank for this, though I admit American public education could possibly have had some part in my fluency. It wasn’t long before I began writing semi-comprehensibly and nagging my parents in not one but two languages.…

At eighteen years old, I have made many decisions in my life, carrying from what to wear in the morning to what classes I should take in high school in order to better prepare myself for college. I grew up in a household, which valued reading but it wasn’t until I was in middle school that I truly fell in love with the liberal arts. My seventh grade English teacher used Shakespeare to exemplify the modern dramatic literature style. Her passion for teaching and fondness of classical works instilled an eagerness to explore further literature. My deep-seated appreciation for English became stronger in high school, as I discovered authors such as Dostoyevsky and Hardy. My interest in the sciences also came to fruition when I began my biology courses, under an engaging instructor.…
