Introduction Throughout history the Visual Arts have been vital to the communication between and survival of the human species. We have evolved over thousands of years from the time of the cavemen our first art being that depicting that of the hunt to the modern surrealism depicted by Salvador Dalí. The vast expanse of emotion behind visual art is truly beyond the peripheral of the mind’s eye. The talents depicted by such magnificent Baroque artists such as Rembrandt, Caravaggio, and the female painter Artemisia Gentileschi as well as many others have given artists through the ages to both inspiration and encouragement to pursue their own work.
Baroque Aesthetic Principles
Describing a period of time between 1590 and 1720, the Baroque period is seen as a period of opulence and extravagance as well as for the religious reflections in the art. Baroque is classified usually by location but the most common ways are to determine them by Italian Baroque, Northern Baroque, and Aristocratic Baroque. Baroque art could come in many forms including paintings which could be as large as full scale wall paintings or huge frescoes for ceilings, such as the Sistine Chapel, which depicted many religious scenes, or small such as individual pieces for private families. These visual pieces gave the viewers ‘a heightened sense of participation in the events of the Christian story and the rituals of worship’. (Fiero, 2012) One of the best examples of Baroque aesthetics is Andrea Pozzo’s Apotheosis of Saint Ignatius (1691). The purpose of painting the ceiling of a church, its walls, staining the glass windows in later years was not only for the beautification of the house of ‘God’ but also to turn the building into a theatre for sacred drama. The painting done by Pozzo depicting the rise of Saint Ignatius into divinity not only brings people into a church to look in wonder but also makes them wonder about the story itself and ask about the wonderful sights depicted in such an incredible painting. Rather than horror it depicts the wonders of Heaven leading more to learn about Christianity. Transforming to the 20th Century There is a Baroque painting by Maria van Oosterwyck, Vanitas Still Life (1668), containing incredible amount of symbolism, imagery, and naturalism traits that are basic and admired features esteemed in artwork to this day. Symbolism and imagery are basic features that were preserved through the centuries but that have also dramatically changed through various artworks as the years progressed. Manet’s scandelous’ painting Le Déjeuner sur l 'herbe The Luncheon on the Grass or (Le Bain/The Bath) in 1883 but contained symbolism and imagery. Depicting a female lunching nude with two men while a half-naked female bathes nearby, the painting was considered scandalous as nudity outside of mythical or allegory context was considered indecent. Later, it was Picasso and Munch that brought about more of the symbolism and imagery into the 20th century. Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon(1907) stripped the figures of the traditional aspects of western art and using symbolism or lack thereof using cubism to depict the five ladies in the brothel he painted. Munch’s Scream has been described and linked to many things, ‘one of which being the artists memory of the volcanic eruption of Krakatoa’ (Wikipedia), but from the artist himself he says “I walked with two friends. Then the sun sank. Suddenly the sky turned red as blood…. My friends walked on, and I was left alone, trembling with fear. I felt as if all nature were filled with one mighty unending shriek.” (Fiero, 2012) This description fills the reader with imagery as great as the painting itself. Commercial visual arts in today’s society have one goal and that is to make a customer purchase the item that they are selling, however, they still make the effort to entice the buyer regardless of need. The search engine of Amazon.com revealed an indication into the aesthetic baroque-like commercialization of products similar to the household goods like a basket for peaches or a bowl for
