Polydectes wished to marry Danae and thought Perseus was in the way of his desires. Polydectes made a bet saying that if Perseus was able to kill Medusa, he would leave Danae alone. However, if Perseus failed, he would marry her. Perseus was eager to prove himself and took Polydectes up on the deal. Perseus was helped by Hermes and Athena who told him to speak with the wise Graeae. The Graeae used an eye to see and Perseus stole it from them.
