As a summation of Paul’s argument from the beginning of his letter up to this point Paul is laying out the implications of the present reality in relationship to the promised future experienced in Christ. God not only desires to intimately know all things about his creation, but he actively works for the good of all creation. This is a call, that while the Holy Spirit is aiding us in our weakness, we are called to participate in the work of God as he is actively renewing all things. As 2 Peter 3:11-12 asks, “What kind of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God.” The Spirit’s intercession in prayer and help in our weakness enable us to live lives of holiness and godliness while we actively wait for and seek the Lord’s return.
