Transient synovitis is a common childhood condition involving pain, swelling, irritation, and limited motion of the hip joint. This usually only affects one hip joint. Transient means that the condition gradually gets better on its own.
Transient synovitis of the hip often develops after an upper respiratory or gastrointestinal infection. Another name for this condition is toxic synovitis.
CAUSES
The exact cause of this condition is not known.
RISK FACTORS
This condition is more likely to develop in:
• Boys
• Children who are 2–10 years old.
• Children who have had a recent upper respiratory infection or gastrointestinal infection.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of this condition may start suddenly or gradually.
