PTSD and Beloved
PTSD better known as post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health issue which is triggered by traumatizing events witnessed or that have occurred. Such symptoms can be lack of body function, emotional shutdown, and anxiety. In the novel Beloved this illness is displayed as live characters that have to overcome a traumatic effect that slavery left them with. Beloved incorporates PTSD into Seth, Denver, and Paul D who have to overcome the effects of slavery and future generations.
First of all three Sethe portrays the strongest symptoms of PTSD and holds true due to her symptoms consisting of actual PTSD symptoms in Beloved. Seth constantly relives her trauma like PTSD Treatment Designed Specifically for Monks stated “Most people who suffer the extent of the extent to reliving it.” Sethe often times avoids remembering or recalling any events due to her experience with slavery for the trauma that Sethe has to constantly relive. In Beloved Paul D shows that emotion is risky specifically when “Risky, thought Paul D, very risky.For a used-to-be-slave woman to love anything that much was dangerous,” (54 Torri Morrison) showing that any degree of love and affection is a danger. Likewise, Denver also learned from like many other children do follow the actions of parents and often times do repeat it. When Denver is stated to be “She threw them all away but you. The one from the crew she threw away on the island. The others from more whites she also threw away. Without names, she threw them.”(74 Torri Morrison) Denver is constantly alone and antisocial leading her to wonder off alone to secluded places without any children around. Denver is the proof that PTSD can be passed down along with the effects that come with trauma down generation to
