Overt Racism Vs Covert Racism

Improved Essays
The issue I tend to investigate is overt racism vs covert racism. Covert racism is when it’s out in the open and overt is not openly acknowledged or displayed. While racism is in general a negative part of our society because it divides groups, the issue here is it better for people to display their content for other groups or is racism better off hidden. So the question is covert racism or overt racism more harmful to society is what I will investigate. The reason I want to explore this topic is because I am a young African-American woman living in the south and my mother faced racism in her life. I, however, have never faced racism towards me, but the topic is interesting to me. I have seen racism online, but not directly in front of my face.

So one of the reasons I decided to start writing up this social justice 101 series is because of the word racism. In the dictionary, racism is defined as “Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief.” However within social justice and sociological circles it is understood that that is not really how racism works, and that racism is a much more insidious and deep-rooted thing than that. What many people term “racism” (or reverse-racism) is extremely different from the sociological concept of racism, or what minorities experience as racism. Calling them by the same name is demeaning to the experience that minorities have of real racism.…

The creator of the Critical Race Theory, Derrick Bell, said that “oppressors are neither neatly divorceable from one another nor amendable to strict organization” (Crawford 112). He has divided the theory into several subdivisions including a questioning of the dominant belief system/status quo; the centrality of experiential knowledge; and a multidisciplinary perspective.…

    1. No, I was not aware of the historical practices of discrimination against African Americans in real estate. Not being aware of the history it caused me to conduct a research about why real estate was difficult for African Americans. I never really experienced race or segregation where I grew up unless I traveled out from my hometown. This is because I lived in an area that was heavily populated with Hispanics/ Mexicans, which I never really saw any other race/culture in my hometown.…

The only way that racism is present on the individual level in my life is when my friends may make a racist remark to me. I will usually not let my friends get away with this because it makes me uncomfortable to be judging others without actually knowing them. On an institutional level, I believe that racism is very prevalent in my surroundings. One way that I see institutional racism is in my community. As I previously said, I live in a rich, small, white community where most of the houses cost at least a million dollars.…

I never really thought too much about racism when growing up. Maybe that is due to my upbringing. I was raised in a small diverse country town where, for the most part, everyone got along. Not to say that there was no racism; it just was not seen very often. Some would call me lucky to have been so naïve in my microcosm.…
