A lie is a statement that is intended to be misleading. The practice of communicating lies is called lying, and a person who communicates a lie may be called a liar. In my research, I’ve discovered that when people tell an undetailed lie about themselves, they tend to use I and me less often than people who are being truthful. Instead, they’ll speak about themselves in the third person, or even shorten their language. Anything to give themselves psychological distance from the lie. If someone keeps performing a random physical action that seems unnecessary, they may be lying. The guilt and anxiety make them restless. To sell us on the honesty of their answers, liars often use phrases emphasizing the strength of their statements.
It’s good to be honest. Being honest with others means that we set out to say only what we sincerely believe. Plus, there are many benefits to being honest. We only have to keep track of one version of reality. This will leave our brains free to work on interesting creative problems instead of keeping track of what we said to whom. People will trust us more. We can be more confident in social situations, because we aren’t worried that people might compare our discordant stories with each other, and root out our
