While suffering in the battles of the time period they are set in, two friends, George and Lennie strive for the hopes of owning their very own ranch one day. While this novel is about George and Lennie’s friendship, it is also about the theme of loneliness and isolation. Many of the minor characters in this novel have one thing in common: they are very lonely due to the obstacles that they have been dealt in life. The other characters in the novel prejudge them and make remarks about what they see in the characters without knowing why they are that way. Candy’s first impression with the other characters comes off as isolated when he says “A guy on a ranch don’t never listen nor he don’t ast no questions” (67). He is showing them that he has already been isolated. Curley’s wife is also judged very unpleasantly when she is first seen. “George looked around to Lennie. “Jesus, what a tramp”” (30). George has just seen Curley’s wife and is already calling her a tramp to others for the way that she looks. Even though the other characters already have their own opinions, Candy does have real reasons to be as isolated as he …show more content…
It shows this because both characters were judged as the useless old swamper or the tramp without knowing why they are so isolated and lonely in their life. The theme of loneliness is an important theme in literature because it forced the reader to connect with the character by bringing emotions into the reader’s thoughts. While reading Of Mice and Men the reader may start to realize that they treat others the same as the other characters treated Candy and Curley’s wife. This novel may challenge the reader to get to know people before judging them. It may also give them more compassionateness for others who are lonely or isolated that they know. Next time, they may think of Candy and Curley’s wife’s situations when they are thinking about prejudging someone based on how they may seem at first

Breaking down this quote into parts, the first conflict creates action then action creates a character. First, conflict creates action means when there is a conflict people will often take action to stop the conflict. An interpretation of action creates a character is how an action can shape a character, and how others would judge or think about the character. To Curley, his wife is more of a possession than a lover, and the mere fact that Curley becomes enraged rather than mournful when his wife is killed supports the idea that he somewhat objectifies her: he reacts as though his wife is a toy that someone has just taken from him. The lack of affection Curley provides his wife with only drives her, in a sense, to “act out” more. As all of the other characters know, Curley does not approve of his wife talking to other men, and Candy even says to Curley’s Wife, “‘...maybe you better jus’ scatter along now, ‘cause Curley maybe ain’t gonna like his wife out in the barn with us ‘bindle stiffs’’” as well as later on saying, “‘You better go home now,’...’If you go right now, we won’t tell Curley you was here’” (81). When it all comes down to it, though, looking elsewhere for attention feels to be the only way…

The other characters have not let themselves be dependent on others; they feel they must rely on only themselves. John Steinbeck expressed his life through his novels, novellas and poems. For instance, many of Steinbeck’s literary works take place in an area similar to his own home, Salinas Valley, California, an area full of farms, ranches, and orchards (Bloom). Also, California was an area known for attracting farm hands and migrant workers during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl eras because the soil was more nutrient-rich due to its short history of farming (Bloom). This setting transferred over to several of Steinbeck’s works including Of Mice and Men (1937), which is actually set in Salinas Valley. Another example of Steinbeck writing his life into his works is that, as a writer, Steinbeck often struggled financially and was forced to work outside…
