Obsession In The Most Dangerous Game By Richard Connell

In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the theme of the story is that obsession can be dangerous. The protagonist of the story is Rainsferd and he is sailing past “Ship Trap Island.” Rainsferd is a good well known hunter. The antagonist of the story is General Zaroff. Zaroff fought in a war and likes to hunt. Zaroff got tired of hunting animals because he could predict their moves. Zaroff’s solution was to start hunting people that were trained by his assistant Ivan. Zaroff sidekick is a man named Ivan. Ivan is a giant and is mute and deaf. The setting takes place on a boat near “Ship Trap Island.” When Rainsferd finds Zaroff, Zaroff is hospitable at first but then Rainsferd finds out Zaroff’s secret. This trap injures Zaroff, but he lets Rainsferd go again. Rainsferd makes a pit trap with some sharp stakes, the stakes kills one of Zaroff’s dog and Zaroff lets him go again. Rainsferd set a trap with his knife intending to kill Zaroff but instead he kills Ivan. Rainsferd realizes that he is trapped. He is on the edge of a cliff with a bunch of dogs after him. Rainsferd decides to jump off the cliff. This is the climax because Rainsferd could not come back after he jumped off the cliff. Zaroff is annoyed that Rainsferd escaped. Zaroff thought about this while he was eating his dinner. Rainsferd hid in Zaroff’s room while he was getting ready for bed, and then they fought. Rainsferd kills Zaroff and sleeps in his bed and he might fall into the same pattern as Zaroff. The author left what Rainsferd did after he won against Zaroff uncertain. The main idea of “The Most Dangerous Game” is do not be so quick to trust people because they may not be who they seem. The main idea shows what type of person Zaroff is. Zaroff showed what it means to be civilized because he hunts people and that shows the reader what being civilized
