When a researcher becomes actively involve in their own study, it gives them a direct knowledge of the life of those they are studying. Such direct knowledge of participant life experiences are valued in getting precious material which might not be conceivable without being actively involve (Gillespie & Michelson, 2011; Cozby & Bates, 2012). For example, Gillespie & Michelson (2011) illustrated the benefit of being actively involve when studying subjects. In their publish study the authors used a participant observational research by actively participating in a local group to study why voting is not taking seriously by some Americans and why it is racialized along color (p. 261). Nonparticipant observation unlike participant observation is a type of study in which the investigator is not from the local group. It is typically an outsider that does not takes an active part in the study. This type of method is sometimes use to stay or appear objective. An example of this type of research will be a study to learn about the Pygmies in Cameroon or by Atwell & Caldwell (2005) in which they examined ways to increase multidisciplinary team work relating to discharge planning in nursing facilities with the use of videos. A key part of both methods is deciding to remain covert or disclose the researcher’s identity. A concealed observational study …show more content…
In my intended study that is focus on the effects of lack of racial and ethnic diversity on firm performance I will employ the total quality management TQM in public sector to help me measure how organizational performance is effected when the workforce is not racially and ethnically diverse (Diana, 2014). This tool was accepted in the 1980’s with the aim of improving services received by the public when they visit government offices and also as a way to measure the effectiveness of services received (Diana, 2014). Borders et al, (2014) used the Motivational Interviewing for Significant Others coding system with the System for Coding Couples’ Interactions in Therapy–Alcohol (SCCIT-A) to examine the efficacy of alcohol disorder therapy in couples. They found that Alcohol Behavioral Couple Therapy (ABCT) showed significant improvements in drinking outcomes when couples were willing to be go through the therapy as a team. When using coding systems, a number of factors should be considered. One such factor is that of reactivity (Creswell, 2013). This can happen if for example, my presence in studying the subjects in my study affects how they react to certain treatments. To avoid such an error, I can take steps to concealing my presence (Borders et al, 2014; Cozby & Bates, 2012). A second factor is the reliability of the results. This relates to how
